Hey im looking towards the future and I'm eyeing the AMD 8 core bulldozer CPU'S coming down the line. I'v seen some source say there going to use a AM3+ Socket and im wondering if that means youll be able to toss one in a current AM3+ compatible board?

That "market" is no different from any other market. Not all software makes the best use of 24 cores - some of the tests in that link didn't even make use of 12 cores. How is a lower clocked 24 core server supposed to perform against a higher clocked 12 core server when the workloads are only optimised for 12 cores?

I don't think the 1156 line of CPU's will be long for this world once SB starts to ramp up and even 1366 CPU's will surely be tailing off dramatically as the year wears on.

Yes i7 990x is a 1366 part.

However I would write that off as the peak of performance Intel is going to offer on socket 1366, as they are looking to move consumers across to both socket 1155 & 2011, plus introduce their 22nm products in Q1 11.

None of that makes me think the 1366 treatment will be any different to what we saw for socket 775, when sockets 1366 & 1156 were introduced.
 




Perhaps you should tell Intel to use real cores, then the threads ARE cores. Until then what Task Manager says is what matters.
 

No, what task manager says isn't what matters. What execution resources the CPU has, how it uses them, and how it performs are what matters.
 


~5% faster in integer, ~20% faster in FP. Interlagos will have ~50% more throughput than MC, so for SB to beat AMD, they need to be ~55% faster at a minimum. I haven't seen any statements on SB server performance, but I am guessing their claims, with only 33% more cores, is going to fall short of 55%. But we haven't seen any claims on the server side yet, other than a Q4 launch for the 2P stuff.



Actually, what is also missing is the pricing. You really shouldn't compare performance without comparing pricing as well. I don't know the pricing off the top of my head but a 6174 should be ~$1165 IIRC and the x5670 is ~$1440. That means several hundred dollars difference in total CPU costs.




QPI is intel proprietary. You will not see us do anything with that.

 


True - I was responding to somebody's statement that 1366 wouldn't 'be around for long'. Even if the 990X is the last CPU released on that socket, it'll be years before it disappears, similar to 775.

I know socket 2011 will be the performance socket, but what I have seen conflicting rumors is the supposed 1356 socket (replacement for 1366) - tri-channel, single QPI link, etc. Dunno if Intel would complicate their lineup to that degree however..
 


No, Cray is HPC (high performance computing) - aka, supercomputers.

In server, AMD has dropped from around 10+ percent marketshare a year ago down to something like 6% today - a 40% decrease. At least those were the last IDC figures I saw months ago. And this was after the debut of both Magny Cours and the Westmere-based Xeons..

So either Magny Cours is not as good as we have been told, or JF needs to start flogging his staff regularly 😛..

I never make performance statemetnt about unannounced products relative to a competitor's unannounced product. those are worth the electrons that they are written on.



Someone needs to tell Intel then because their next version of the 2P is called Sandybridge EP. You should do a little research on that, you'll find out there is a SB in the server space.
 

The supercomputer builders must be biased against AMD :lol:
