So I had a folder on my desktop named "Desktop" and in that folder was another folder called "Desktop"
and I had a whole bunch of files in that second desktop folder (including Reshade for my games)
But when I launched one of my games, I noticed reshade was gone so I went to check the folder, and the regular "Desktop" folder on the desktop was there, but its contents were totally gone. I tried using a file recovery software but since it's an SSD there really was nothing to find.
Does anyone know what happened and how I can prevent it from happening in the future?

Yes backups are important.

However being an SSD has everything to do with it since hard drives will write that file and it will only be permanently deleted when it is overwritten. I'm pretty sure SSDs just straight up delete it since it isn't physically written onto a disk.

I think what USAFRet meant, is the fact you have an ssd wouldn't play a part in your folder disappearing. Further an SSD has a permanent file structure so the data is not just floating around in space. However, you are right that it is nearly impossible to recover deleted data from an SSD, as rather than a HHD leaving the file on it's discs until it's written over, an SSD, when it deletes a file, turns off the sector(s) used to store the deleted data, making it available to store additional data, but extremely hard to recover.
