Read through this:

"Nissan said it could sell information about drivers and passengers’ sexual activity, intelligence and health diagnosis to data brokers, law enforcement agencies and other companies. German manufacturer Volkswagen said it could record drivers’ voices to profile them for targeted ads."

"Car company Subaru, for one, said the very fact of being a passenger in one of its cars implies consenting to their privacy policy, according to the report."

If that holds up in court then no one is "private" anywhere....

Sort of like "if my camera can see you then that implies that you have consented to my privacy policies."

And regarding potential future claims that data is "not sold" that does not exclude trading data.

Full disclosure: we own a Subaru Outback.

Voyeurs will be very disappointed. 🙈🙉🙊 The fourth monkey is left to your imagination.

My car and google know where I am nearly 100% of the time. And then I carry around another device that lets them know my exact location.

Orwellian nightmare fuel.

Not going to be too long before people will be practically unable to get a job based on data mining information.

Indeed.

Your employer discovers that your location on your day off was near a competitor's location.

Nevermind the flat tire. And all the tire ads popping up on personal devices along with towing services.

TIN FOIL HAT: what are they trying to hide that they need to know where you are at all times?

No where is private now, not if there is money to be made. What electronic devices have people got in their bedrooms?

IS this why everything is Smart now? So it can spy on customers and sell info to advertisers.

somehow reminds me of Red Dwarf, in that every surface could become an interactive screen, even showers... leading to some funny scenes.

Mostly, they just want to sell that data, anonymized or not, to advertisers.

For the advertisers:
Knowing that people from this neighborhood spend an average of X hours per week at that shopping mall, blah, blah, blah

Everyone is selling 'your' data.
The DMV - 1 week after the license plates arrived for my Mini....extended warranty ads in the mail. Including 2 that said in big red letters "FINAL NOTICE".

They must be starved for mine as I don't buy anything. Or rarely. And I block as many ads as I can... hate to imagine the internet with ads now... forums bad enough when not logged on. Chrome wants us to see them all... so I don't use it. I don't want a personalised advert experience besides the option of none at all.

okay, that and I have a mobile phone in my room.

I might get targeted ads now, I just never see any.

rare I see computer hardware advertised anywhere.
If advertising didn't work, it wouldn't be a multi billion dollar industry.

And I've said this here before, ads are not to make you go buy something.
It is there to inform you, and give you a warm fuzzy about the company.

So that the next time you ARE looking to buy something, you may be more inclined to buy from WarmFuzzy, than those other idiots.

if advertising didn't work, people wouldn't spend stupid amounts of money on shiny rocks (refer Diamonds). Its crazy we can make them now but the real ones are still 10x more valuable for some reason.

iu
They can't follow me there...

It is there to ... give you a warm fuzzy about the company.
Instead, it does the opposite - for some at least.
If I'm interested in a product, I'll look into it myself. Ads are more likely to drive me away from what's being advertised.

I drive a 1999 Subaru Forester in excellent condition. Well maintained. Additionally I use an Alcatel One Touch Cell phone (Never a smart phone). I've never been a subscriber to new technology as I've always predicted an era where mankind would find themselves enslaved by the complexities of the very entity created to 'make our lives simpler'.

Dang. You got me there.
They could at least cut back on the frequency for some of these, yes?
hehe...I worked in the IT dept (lead Microsoft dev) for a major marketing research company for 8 years.
Inform and warmfuzzy were the main concepts.

Long ago (early 2000s TV era), they showed us a graph of ad spending vs retail sales.
Sales literally tracked ad spending. The up and down curves were near identical.

Aww, fiddlesticks... so fat chance of ads ever slowing down.

They found advertising in Pompeii... its been around for a long time. For as long as people wanted to tell other people about their services/products, its existed.

Only things that are changing are their means of finding out what you want. Everything you buy now is likely to be spying on you. No more dumb cars... everyone needs a new car that reports their every action. How soon before someone is cancelled for what they said in their car and not allowed to drive it?

good thing we can still buy monitors that don't come pre equipped with microphones and Cameras.
