Was thinking of upgrading, anyone have suggestions ?
Main use is gaming (no O/Cing).

Ive been out of the loop for a while, so enlighten me on any recent developments since the NForce 2 came out.

System info:
Win98SE
Asus A7PRO (KT133, with AWARD BIOS)
256MB PC133 RAM
Radeon 9000 64MB DDR
Motorola 56K
SB Vibra 128

basically the p4's have taken the performance crown undisputibly with their p4c's and intels 865 and 875 chipsets which for people who are upgrading now seem to be the hot ticket because they have SOME upgrade potential in the future...if i were you i would wait for intel and amd to release their new platforms and make a decision then...forgot to mention RDRAM is also being phased out in favor of dual channel ddr...

There is no smell better than fried silicon

In particular, I was thinking of upgrading my CPU, Mobo, RAM and possibly my Hard disk (If it offers any significant performance increase, its a Quantum Fireball ATA66)

System info:
Win98SE
Asus A7PRO (KT133, with AWARD BIOS)

Radeon 9000 64MB DDR
Motorola 56K
SB Vibra 128

Upgrading the CPU/RAM/MOBO/HDD will surely improve the overall performance of your system. And also note that i will prefer you also to upgrade to Windows XP since it works well with newer hardwares.

The Ultimate Video Processor:
GeForceFX + Radeon + Parhelia = "Radeohelia FX"

XP since it works well with newer hardwares.
but adds $$$ to the cost... and doesn't really give you any advantage... I'd say stick with 98 myself, unless you're gonna upgrade to more than 512Mb of RAM (9X cannot handle more than this)

[EDIT]
oh yeah - I would also suggest waiting for A64 and Prescott.... At the very least so the prices for current top-end stuff suddenly take a dive.

$hit Happens. I just wish it would happen to someone else for a change.
Edited by ChipDeath on 07/22/03 11:06 AM.

yup...i have installed 2k on systems that only have 64mb of memory and it worked great...2k pro is my os of choice...

2k pro is tha sh1t. Run super smooth and stable on PII300 with 256meg of ram. I foudn that with 2k the more ram the smoother it(espically with older cpu)

So...isnt anyone going to give me any suggestions on what parts to buy ?

Money is of no concern, unless you are spending it. Im looking for something which offers performance at a decent price here.

Intel or AMD ? which is cheaper and faster ?

AMD is always the good choice for bang for the buck, but Intel's P4 2.4c is very tempting.

The Ultimate Video Processor:
GeForceFX + Radeon + Parhelia = "Radeohelia FX"

Since you have loads of money. Than buy P4 3.2c Abit IS7G or Asus P4P800 Deluxe Mobo. Hyperx PC3500 or PC 3700 or PC4000. Corsair makes them too. From what Iv'e read Sapphire 9800 PRO 128MB DDR the best vid card. Do you need monitor? I would upgrade OS to Windows 2000 PRO. Do you need speakers? DVD? CD rewrite?

Perhaps you misread my comment "Money is of no concern, unless your spending it" Like I said before I wanted high performance at low cost.

And I would also like to remain at standard ram speeds (ie. 400)

Actually that quote means that i dont care bout money...you ment...Money is of concern...unless you are spending it

barton 2500+
slk-900
8rda+
4 case fans
350 watt antec
1gb of corsair xms (pc3500)
highpoint rocket raid
2x 60gb WD special edditions
radeon 9700pro

That would be a nice overclocker

So easy to fry yet tastes so good...

I kind of deviated from some of the suggestions and this is what I came out with:

Epox EP-8RDA3+
AMD (Barton Core) Athlon XP 2500+ Retail Boxed
Generic 512MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM
Western Digital WD800JB 80GB Special Edition
Lite-On LTR-52246S
Antec SLK1600
1.44 Floppy

It seems I might as well create a new box, and use the following bits and pieces I already have with it.

Radeon 9000
56K WinModem
