May want to take a look at this post Jon made: https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/...anagement-it-will-burn-up.300229/post-4866585

A case of both user error and Nvidia's ambitions biting their own butt?
Why did they feel the need to push for higher clocks on the 4090? This could be a hint at RX 7000's raster performance - as well as perf per watt - in which case Nvidia's solution was to throw more power at it again to stay the performance king.
"No one cares about power use after all." /S

So.... to summarize:

"Stupid is as stupid does"
"Cheap is as cheap does"
"Bean counters"- the bane of all consumers !
Not really. This issue has nothing to do with cost cutting. There's nothing wrong with the cable connector design. The problem lies with 4090 board designers. The placement of the power plug doesn't allow for the cable to route within spec for "normal" sized cases.

New industry: Air coolers and heat sinks for power cables? Jacketed liquid cooled electrical cords?

Extra points for quiet fans and LEDs that tell you the temp based on color.

Now that I tihink about it, perhaps this is one of the reason why nvidia decided to mount the power connector horizontally this time around. To minimize the chance for this melting/burning issue to happend.

Such stories near Halloween... I am now all scared to stress-test the CPU of the DDR5 rig I just put together.

I mean, I know that the story is about a specific thing with the 4090, and CPU temp looks good here so far I suppose, with pretty much constantly 39° C (idle). But still... spooooky.

So far, the people reporting the problem seem to have been beside their computers when they began to smell something burning. But imagine if this had been a PC that was running unsupervised. At the least the computer is potentially ruined. At worst, it creates and house/apartment fire.

Gigabyte managed to send the Reddit user a new 4090? Wait... I thought the 4090s were all sold out... everywhere?!

Uh-huh! This alleged claim (LIE, fake crisis... again) deserves its on article from the so-called tech sites (only in their name 😉), though. Thanks to TH, they keeping bringing the ~ covered ~ truth!

This problem LITERALLY has NOTHING to do with ANYTHING except the RTX 4090's new 16 pin power connector. It has nothing whatsoever to do with ANYTHING else, at all. Period.

Besides which, it has nothing to do with "temperatures" anyhow. It has to do with moving too much current through a poorly designed connector and adapter.

BS. It absolutely has to do with a poorly designed connector and adapter. It does not matter WHAT the specs or design of the 4090 board is. Whatever you spec out to be used WITH that design, better be capable of supporting it, and in this case, it cannot. So far ALL of these connectors are supplied by Nvidia and it's partners, which means they failed to do their due diligence on ensuring that the adapters and connectors could withstand the rigors of the design.

There are beginning to be far more indications that this is probably going to be a widespread issue. Every day, more cases. And if you don't like this "so called" tech site, there are plenty of others you can spend your time at.

Did you misread (YUP) my comment? I'm saluting TH for bringing "the truth" and frowning on "other so-called tech sites" aka shills. Are you alright, or do you need more time into your retirement?! 🙄

I see reactions about, greed, etc. When engineers design a $1000 graphics card, they aren't going to compromise the design over an 8 cent connector. The most likely situation is that an engineer misread the part specification and did not leave enough margin. But there are a bunch of other possibilities. Most likely they will get their connector supplier to address the issue rather quickly. Meanwhile there is an engineer with his tail between his legs trying to explain how this happened.

Really? Because

Uh-huh! This alleged claim (LIE, fake crisis... again)

really doesn't sound like that is true. But if I misunderstood your point, my apologies. Might try to be a little clearer next time so that us old folks, who in reality make up the majority of experienced technicians and enthusiasts in the world, can be sure to not misinterpret what you are saying.

And for the record, that kind of personal insult isn't necessary. Nobody made any disparging personal remarks about YOU so let's avoid doing it to others.

Wow!I was referring to the lies from the SCALPING OEMs, retailers, etc. QUESTIONABLE CLAIMS, dude! Just... STOP... already! 😂🙃🙄

Alright, let's knock off the snark, personal attacks and just general unruliness here. Keep your comments on topic or this thread will be closed and appropriate sanctions handed out. This is the only warning that will be issued.
