your current PSU (300W as you mentioned) is good you can install the graphic card you mentioned without any power falls.
will the zotac gtx750ti 2gb be compatible? it requires 400w while i only have 300w
well with that graphic card the recommended power is 326W which means you need a 400 or 500W PSU and the current PSU could not handle that card.
you can go with Antec VP450 450W for 45$:

any other way to get round this? i dont want to spend any more other than for the graphics card.
just check the palit website and it says the card's minimum power requirement is 300W. should i get the palit one instead?
The manufactures always recommend a bigger PSU than you need. Because they don't know what the rest of your system is, they allow a lot of extra watts just to be safe. There is very little difference between all the 750ti cards, so no point getting one over another. Personally I think you would be fine using your 300W PSU (I know of people with HP Pavilions with a 220W PSU who have used a 750ti and had not problems). If this was a new build I would recommend you get a bigger PSU, but as you said you just want to keep it going for a while, I think it would be fine.
