I'm on a pretty tight budget and have speced out a bare bones Compaq R3000Z
for $1050 after $30 rebate.

Athlon 64 300+
256 MB
30 Gig HD
DVD/CD RW
64 MB nVidia 440 w/5 in 1 card reader and firewire
1200X800 Widescreen
Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN !!

Any thoughts?

FWIW, I just bought one, and I'm pretty pleased with it. Actually received
it yesterday, so haven't had much time to mess with it so far. Sure couldn't
beat the price. I got the 1920x1200 WUXGA screen, which was one of the main
reason with going with Compaq. The built in reader is going to come in
handy! But doesn't do CF, so I bought a PCMCIA CF reader.

Also, I really like the fact that the DVD/CD is on the LEFT side of the
laptop! I don't have to move my mouse and mousepad to access!

You can see the 3D view at www.compaq.com. But you must select one of the
ready-to-ship models to get that option. Took me awhile to figure that one
out.
