It's been a while since I played Ghosts, so I'm a bit foggy about the specific details, but basicly it's something along the lines of BO2's unlock tokens, just shared among characters.

You earn squad points by playing and completing objectives (such as "kill X opponents" or "capture Y points") and directives too, I believe (specific missions that drop during a match and net you squad points and a care package, if completed).
Those points can be used to unlock weapons, accessories or perks for any of your squad members.

Each character you create has its own loadout, its own level and its own unlocked stuff, and is part of your "squad", hence "squad points".
If I recall correctly, you could have used that squad in specific modes...
There is no "start over" button, AFAIK. You're pretty much stuck with what you have.

Besides, my personal opinion is that there is no best gun than the one you feel at ease with, no matter what the community says.
Just have fun, don't care about your w/l or k/d ratios and your rank; it'll be a much nicer experience that way.

could you atleast tell me how the system works with squad points and all that?
since i havent gone thru the tutorial and it seems i cant since the hijacker already got up to lvl 13

If I recall correctly, you could have used that squad in specific modes, competitive or not, against bots or real players (you control 1, the rest goes to the A.I.), which could have squad points as rewards as well.
Each character, however, only allows you to level up; instead of prestiging, you actually level each character up starting from square one, and each one of them at max level earns you a prestige; this way, you're pretty much forced to spend them amongst members rather than for yourself only (unless you don't care about prestiging).

That's, pretty much it. Worrying about wasted tokens is useless, as they're insanely easy to come by (I believe I unlocked everything I needed at a certain point and had around 2k tokens left).
