Anybody still use Core 2's?

My HP OEM motherboard broken down, which was combined with a i5 4440, now ever since, I got pushed back to the socket 775. Should I save for the same OEM motherboard for $200 or get the ASRock H81M DGS for $79 AUD? (Which I am planning to get). I kept the i5 in hopes of one day that I will get the motherboard for it.

You read his post, the one above mine?

He probably owned a Core 2 with 775 socket and had to use that again when his primary system with 1150 socket broke down. You can't use the i5-4440 anymore after your 1150 socket breaks down, as It's not 775 socket compatible. So he uses his Core 2 CPU with the LGA 775 socket he had laying around.

Not sure where this thread is going though.

My Nephew is running a Q9650 overclocked to 4.2 GHz, an Asus X48 motherboard, 8 GB DDR3 1600, two SSD's in RAID0, and an overclocked GTX 1060 6GB. He says it's still a competitive gaming rig.

Here's his O/C'd PassMark CPU score compared to newer processors with similar scores:

i5 6400 - 6,550
i5 3450 - 6,448
i5 2500K - 6,438
i5 4440 - 6,404
Q9650 @ 4.2 - 6,342
FX6300 - 6,330
i5 2500 - 6,232
i7 975 - 6,214
i5 3340 - 5,998

3DMark Time Spy - 3,929
3DMark Fire Strike - 10,321

What I meant was that I was forced to use the socket 775 after the other motherboard broken down, so now my main system is a C2D E8400 paired with GT 730. Still works fine after all those years!

That's a really good benchmark, especially for a LGA 775 CPU.

Nice! do you still use it?

I have an i5-4670k in my main system.

I'll upgrade that when Intel releases the 9th or 10th generation Core i5 (or it's equivalent if Intel moves on to using a different naming scheme). At that point the i5-4670k will go into my HTPC so that I can watch videos. I'll toss in my GTX 960 just in case the requirements to watch videos from streaming services somehow becomes ridiculously high.
