Destroy All Humans.

This one immiedietly got my attention when I first read about it a year ago.
Figured, its either going to be fun as heck with the open game play and
satire/humor or its going to be cheesy.

Anyone playing? Is it of quality that will keep it at $50 for some time or
quality that you'd expect it to drop to $40/$30 relatively quickly?

Cheers!

I'm playing it. I'll let you know what I think once I get a little
further into it. That may be awhile, though, Battlefield Two just came
out as well.

I'm around 18% into the game (there's a progress meter in the
options), and having fun with it so far. Think of Grand Theft Auto
meets Mars Attacks, and you pretty much have DAH. Compared to the GTA
series, DAH is a bit more simplistic, but picking up and throwing
vehicles and pesky humans around never seems to get old. Not yet,
anyway. :-D The missions are gradually getting more difficult, but not
to the point of frustration. So far I haven't experienced any puzzle
elements to the game, but you can develop a strategy, depending on the
mission. For example, rooftops can offer protection from weapon fire,
and your flying saucer can be utilized in certain missions when more
firepower is needed. Albeit not deep strategy, but it's there. ;-D As
far as humor goes, it's not exactly a roll-around-on-the-floor
knee-slapper, but I've chuckled several times at references to the
1950's and those old, cheesy sci-fi movies.

So, is it worth $50.00, you ask? Well, yes... and no. I don't feel
that I've wasted my money on this game, but I do wish the gameplay was
a bit deeper. I'm a bit nostalgic for sci-fi, so DAH for me is a bit
of fresh air in the world of gaming. The missions (so far) have varied
enough to keep things interesting, so I feel that I won't get bored
with DAH anytime soon. I doubt the game will drop in price before the
end of the year, so you might want to either bite the bullet or rent
it first. Either way, I'm sure you'll enjoy DAH for what it does
best... Destroying humans! ;-D

How long did it take you to get 18% through the game? Are there
multiplayer options, like completing missions together?

I was going to wait, but I sampled it at EB or somewhere, and it was
really fun. Now after reading your review I'm thinking I might need to
bite that bullet.

Also, since this is crossposted, what console are you playing it on?

I started playing last evening after purchasing the game, and got to
19% completion before going to bed, so I'd say around 4 or 5 hours.
Now that wasn't mission time alone, since after completing a mission,
you can continue to dish out mayhem on the pathetic humans for as long
as you want. :-D As others have stated, there is no multiplayer or
co-op mode, unfortunately.

I just finished completing a few more missions, and DAH just keeps
getting better and better! So definitely do yourself a favor and
purchase this game ASAP!

I damn-near bought DAH last night, until I saw that it wasn't multi-player. I
don't get much out of a game unless I can share the mayhem with friends.

Hi,

Thanks for the info! Seems like the general consensus is wishing the
gameplay was a little more involved, but everything else makes for a pretty
fun game in a niche of it's own.

I think I may just go bite the $50 bullet. Nothing else is "standing out"
for me at the moment anyway.

Cheers!

Hi,

Thanks for the replies! I just picked a copy of DAH and ,while only a few
missions in, having a lot of fun.

GTA combined with "Mars Attacks" was a very good summary.

I was worried that the cheese would be hollow, but it comes across as both
artistic and smart. Even the "behind the scenes" stuff is woven together
artistically.

Cute game that I'm sure will provide hours of just plain fun!

Cheers!

The first time you play, probably an hour or two. Most of which will be
spent learning the interfaces and then just having fun blowing stuff up.
After the first time, probably can get to that point in about 30 minutes. I
had to replay the "TV antennas" mission several times, but finally got it.

One of the subtle, yet fun, things with the game is that the developers
addressed various things that players think while playing various
scenerios -- and draws humor upon them. I.e., comments about the time
limits for "rampage missions" and such. On the title screen, if you don't
select anything for a period of time then Pox (one of the greys) asks why
you are away from your TV (getting chips and dips?) and he doesn't like
talking to himself. Simple, subtle, stuff like that helps weave it all
together nicely.

DAH raws from a lot of sources. B movies, pulp art, and pretty much
everything that is stereotypical of the 50's. All the stereotype 50's UFO
(saucers, death rays, ect) are there along with more recent UFO stereotypes
(cattle mutilation, body snatching, and of course -- anal probing). The
contrast between the two allow for some humor as well -- (Cypto doesn't like
being called a "little green man" since he is grey).

As others have said, the missions come across as rather short and can feel a
little repetative once you find some technique pattern that works. They are
still very fun though. The game also allows you to "sandbox" once your
mission is completed. You can either go back to the mothership for a new
mission or stay on the level to raise hell. Raising hell after mission
completetion has no impact on the game line -- even if you are killed.
(I.e., you don't lose weapons or anything after being killed.)

Gameplay is, as others said, GTA merged with "Mars Attacks". Perhaps a
little "Splinter Cell" thrown in too as some scenerios require you to use
stealth. (Stealth being either "holobobing" the image of a human or hiding
in the shadow ala "Spinter Cell").

A sprinking of political humor is thrown in also. I.e., when reading a
political figure's (mayor) mind you may hear him thinking about the "mess he
made on that dress". (Clinton joke.) Reading one of the Army infantrymen's
mind, you may hear him thinking about "How he should've joined the Texas Air
National Guard since that would be a cushy job." (Bush joke).

Its a sillly and fun game.

I just bought it today and have been exploring the first level. I still
have 4 of those hidden things to find, not sure where in the hell they
are.

One thing that's *really* starting to get on my nerves is when you fly
out of bounds and that dickwad says "you can't leave blah blah blah" and
then says "you have returned blah blah blah" when you fly back in. It's
hard to tell where the boundaries are, and so I keep hearing that over
and over and over.

Other than that, this game is pretty cool.

Speaking as someone who just said "screw it" and bought both...Conker's the
better game. It's funnier than DAH (no mean feat) and has a decent
multiplayer mode. OTOH, I'm really enjoying DAH too. Of course, I have a
huge soft spot for cheesy not-so-classic science fiction, Invader Zim, and
the other influences. You really can't go wrong with either, and I suspect
they'll both be bargain-priced before too long, so whatever you don't pick
up will be readily available later.

Yep, I hear ya. I actually had "Conker" in my hand (with DAH) and came
close to also saying "screw it" and getting both.

Ended up putting "Conker" down even though was tempted. Actually, what I
think I'm going to do is wait until the hype with "Conker" settles and
locate the original N64 ("Conker Bad Fur Day") version of it. Got an N64
still sitting out that is close to retirement (being boxed away) age, but
"Conker" may give it some more life.

Were the graphics redone for the XBox? Most of the reviews make it sound
like pretty much all the XBox version does is slap on multiplayer and Live?

Cheers!

I honestly don't see how that's possible. I enjoyed DAH for about 10
minutes; Conker for hours on end and still going. I'm sure some would
disagree, but IMO, DAH is way to generic and repetitive. Clone,Zap,
Probe, Brain; perhaps I didn't play it enough.

I'm not enjoying DAH. It's way too shallow and repetitive. Plan 9 is more
fun than DAH, and Plan 9 may be the worst movie ever to be transferred to a
dvd.

Textures are redone. The fur looks like Starfox Adventure on the Gamecube,
if you've played that. Geometry is somewhat redone, but not remarkably so.
Lighting is much, much better on the Xbox.

I was going to agree with you about DAH, but I've played a little more and
there is a nice mix up in the levels. It isn't all shooting. Though I do
agree with you the combat is overly simplistic. I usually don't spend much
time free roaming after I completed a mission. It's worth a rental and
that's it.
