groovey... an keenly interested in seeing if it natively resolves the Via ATA100 and AGP issues etc., as well as the AMD page issue... anyway here goes.

[-peep-] would not life be great if we could by a decent chipset for our Socket A's

I downloaded SP2 a few days ago and benchmarked both before and after the installation. I didn't remove the 4in1 from my system (not sure if it is still active).
Anyhow, performance wise, i didn't get a great deal extra. My benchmark results are pretty much the same before and after. Perhaps i should have removed the 4in1. Either way, i have not lost any performance, and my stability has not dropped, so i'm pretty happy overall.

I don't have a tbird though, i have a PIII 1Ghz.

ya Joolz probably no big differance for an intel chipset. but this puppy REALLY supports Via for the first time I mean it SCREAMS.

both of these are microsoft sites. conxion is a microsoft ftp server. the one you link to just uploads off a different location.

I don't have the time to procrastinate.

hey cirrus

While i do have a PIII cpu, i have a VIA chipset on my Abit VP6 MB(Apollo Pro 133A). And like i said, no real gain. Maybe my system was already a well oiled machine (which i pride myself on)

I installed it yesterday. My machine is running just fine, and does seem to be a little faster, more responsive. The only thing I had to do in advance was update my firewall (I use Black Ice Defender, which runs better in Win2K than ZoneAlarmPro.) Otherwise, everything is just great!

Joolz -

what I mean to say is that it's a huge AMD platform boost.

you know what I'm thinking here gaging from the huge performance boost SP2 gives the KT133/KT133A is that FINALLY Microsoft is fully supporting Via AMD chipsets.

so it occurs that at least some of the discontent we AMD owners may have with Via is misdirected?

That's an interesting thing to consider, and I hope that it is true. However, I think we'll need to wait for a while, and start checking the stats as people install SP-2 and see what kind of real-world performance gains people experience with the service pack.

In the meantime, even if the service pack solves the majority of Win2K software problems, this means that people with Win95/98 are still in the same boat, with no relief in site. And it's no solution for people shift to Win ME ... it's just Win98 with repackaged bugs and a lack of access to the command prompt. Even with better multimedia support, the OS's performance increases are offset by the problems generated with terrible non-Plug and Play features, and the system "roll back" feature, which is just far too memory-intensive to work well in a Win 9.X platform.

Finally, this does not change all the problems people are having due to poorly designed hardware on many early variations of VIA 'boards. The most common problem (i.e. locking up in games, with a blank monitor screen) is because of the power leads on the mainboard and/or an inadequate power supply. You may notice that when this issue occurs, rebooting becomes difficult because the video card refuses to initialize during the POST, and this problem becomes worse over time, with the system in question taking longer and longer to reboot.

Other lockups, such as ones where the game simply has a bug, normally do not cause the system to spontaneously shut down, with the fans still running, and a blank monitor screen. Whenever I get a call about this, I ask if the game is still visible on the screen when the system locks up. If that is the case, I know that the problem is usually NOT due to the common AMD/VIA/Power issue.

I won't discriminate ... I've seen similar problems in VIA 'boards with Pentium processors. It just happens less often.

On my P4 system, with a decent power supply, GeForce3 card, and Win2k SP-2, everything appears to finally run the way I want. Although I'm still reserving judgement ... something might show up later, down the road. But somehow, I doubt it.

I said goodbye to my AMD system this morning ... shipped it back to the manufacturer. A moment of silence, please.

P.S. If you are running a GeForce3 in Win2K ... I highly suggest that you install the 12.40 drivers. They are the fastest, most stable drivers released yet.

ja I hear you. its like SP2 was specifically designed to support the KT133/KT133A chipset. I'm telling you I am FLYING over here! I even threw a 800 Duron in a box to test drive SP2 and the damn thing is singing between apps; something that it really couldn't do well before so it gotta be rockin DMA/ATA100 support.

microsoft thank you for allowing Via & AMD to exist; quite magnanimous:)

check this out: i found out how to make a SP2 integrated install disk, so i popped one our of nero. I reformatted and repartitioned my drive (after backing up of course) and then reinstalled Win2k Pro using my SP2 disk. Do you have any idea how damn cool it is to have SP2 already in Win2k after installing? The only updating required is IE which i use 5.5 SP1 just as a preference. Man I am kickin ass over here. The speeds have never been better, god bless Win2k!!!!
Asus A7V bios v.1007 (KT133)
Via 4-in-1 4.31
Promise ATA100 build 35
