I just picked up this monitor (L204WTX) today from Canada Computers for $339 CDN + had to buy a DVI cable ($29.99 CDN.) The first monitor I got had a green pixel in the very top right corner and a bright blue one about 2 inches off centre. This was obviously unacceptable to me. I don't mind dead pixels but bright pixels are excessively annoying, especially on a dynamic contrast monitor because the pixel ends up "flashing".
Anyhow, I took it back and Canada Computers was kind enough to allow me to return it and find one that didn't have any issues. The next one I picked up was fine.
I had a really hard time deciding what LCD monitor to buy. I'm not looking to do any Photoshop work so perfect colour reproduction isn't important. What I need is a sharp and clear monitor for programming and the occasional game or two. I didn't want an expensive LCD either.
I had narrowed my choice down to the Samsung 205BW and the L204WTX. I spent about an hour in the store looking at various pictures and dark backgrounds on both monitors. I found that the Samsung looked smoother, but was also a bit weaker displaying subtle variations in colours, where as the L204WTX displayed those subtleties better. Blacks also look truer on the LG. The Samsung looked a touch "warmer" but the colours on the LG were slightly more vibrant. It was a really tough choice. What swayed me is that the LG has a faster display (at least it is rated faster), has better contrast and more vibrant colours, less back-light leak, and movies look better on it. I have also been reading that this TN panel is actually 8-bit. Not sure if that is true as apparently the 205BW and L204WTX panels are made by the same company.
Something I thought was interesting was that the service desk told me that LG has a pretty good warranty. He said that they will replace the monitor (and ship it to your door under the SWAP warranty) if ONE pixel becomes stuck and it is 2-3" from the side of the display. I haven't confirmed this yet, but I've heard similar info from other LG owners/suppliers.
So far I am very happy with this monitor. The text is clear, colours are vibrant, dark greys and blacks are pretty accurate, and movies looks decent on it. I'm going to try some games tomorrow. Definitely satisfied (and extremely impressed with the service and care from Canada Computers.)
P.S. I bought a Samsung 931C for my wife around Christmas and it has been fabulous as well. Though putting these two monitors together, you can clearly see that the LG displays greys and black better. Her monitor also has a noticeable amount of light leaking from the top and bottom of the display.
