Lots of anti/pro Apple bitching and moaning here...but I think we're missing the interesting question:
What's in that computer that Apple doesn't want circulating publicly? They obviously want their prototype back for a reason, even though the hardware is outdated. I wonder why... thoughts?

You'd think if it was taken to the Mac store they would have run the serial number through their system, generally that's how they ID the device and the components within the device without having to open it up first.

You'd think if this prototype was actually stolen the serial number would have triggered some sort of flag.

Of course if there is no serial number, how can you even prove theft? There's no traceability at that point.

[citation][nom]scook9[/nom]You clearly do not have any experience with the law......does not matter how much you paid for it, you could have even traded a kidney for it - if it was not obtained through legitimate means it is stolen property and you will not get any reimbursement or even a thank you when they seize it (which they could probably have the sheriff come and do). It is obviously Apple's intellectual and physical property. Sure someone stole it a few years ago and Apple may not have made a stink about it - that does not make it any less theirs. The fact that everyone is hating apple for this is pretty pathetic and shows how ignorant the majority of society really is....you can bet Apple is trying to identify who was in custody of this prototype when it went missing and will be firing them if they still work there. And I can't blame that at all for that.I am in no way a fan boy, had an ipod touch and stopped using it completely when I got my first android phone - that is my total involvement in Apple products. No I do not like them much as a company but in this case I have to take their side.Don't let fanboy hate blind you guys.....you can hate apple and still understand why they would be reacting this way.Is it also "evil" of Intel to block the selling of ES chips? Exact same thing....[/citation]
the moment someone comes to take something of mine i purchased, and had no idea it was stolen, and no proof it was stolen, and offering no compensation, it would be a fight to the death

[citation][nom]scook9[/nom]That left a taste of fanboy.....any ways. You think Apple would completely forge a document over something like this? If caught they would probably be fined a few hundred million to be made an example of.Altering the appearance of something (while I agree despicable) and completely fabricating a false document are not really comparable actions. And as for your remark about the law, you are welcome to right your representative to propose to have it reviewed and amended. I think it has been this way for a long time for a reason, it makes the most sense.Allow me to make an example for you: Some one steals your car. They sell it. You would not want to take your car back because the current "owner" paid for it and that is not fair to them?[/citation]
ok, lets look at it this way, you know for a fact that a car is stolen when you buy it, and only a moron wouldn't. lets equate this to... you are buying a older used computer for a linux box. after getting it, for a fair market price, cops come and tell you it was stolen, and you must give it up.

or lets go another way, you go to a garage sale, and find a silly fake ring that is 50 cents, you buy it because why not, later you find out that its real, so when taking it to get appraised, you are told its stolen, and you are getting NOTHING for winning the lottery

[citation][nom]scook9[/nom]If they can prove that it was never sold or given away (which they most likely could) then the only conclusion that could be drawn is that it was stolen.[/citation]

oh no, another conclusion is that they threw it away, but let an intern do it, and he didn't know it was prototype and needed to be thrown away in a special way, so he chucked it in a dumpster.

some one dumpster dove, and pulled it out.

now when you throw something away, its public property, and up for grabs.

The legality is not whether or not it was stolen, but whether or not it was reported as stolen. If there is not a police report for theft of the object, then there is no basis for "stolen property". If there is a police report that filed this specific device as stolen, only then can Apple claim it back as stolen property. Apple can't forge this, because it would have to be filed with a police department. Leave it to a high paid team of lawyers to find a loophole though, laws are for the poor.

I think I would demand that apple pay me a hefty sum of money in return for the laptop. It was purchased legally, so if crApple wants to take possession of my legally owned property, they can pay me for it.

Also, this just goes to show what kind of "geniuses" work at the genius bar... HAHA

Thing is, Its apples fault for shipping out the wrong products, and when they do this. We legally bought those products. And apple seems to way too often have employees lose prototype devices at bars and other places. so. I think that apple should be paying this person for the item.

Nice Kinggraves... now I wonder what an applezealot say about this... it always cracks me up when they try to defend a company who obviously milking them with money ;'p

Folks I'm telling you this whole thing is nothing more than
"iTheater" brought to you by crApple. It's "guerrilla marketing" at its lowest, err finest. The whole this is a publicity stunt.

One more reason to despise Apple and the iZombies that make them possible.

Oh right, and let's assume that is actually a custom modified Apple MacBook Pro... Really, if it has no Serial Number, if Apple employees don't even consider it to be an "Apple product", and have said it to be made of "third party" components, who's to say somebody else put that together and not Apple, the first step to prove it was stolen, would perhaps be, prove exactly to the courts... without having the actual product close to sight, that they made me, prove me that you have some schematics and blue prints of this device, prove me the components used for this with your eyes closed, and then compare it with the actual machine. Then... If it is indeed Apple's doing, then, prove me it was stolen, when exactly did Apple notice the product disappeared, and explain it to the court why wasn't it a big deal back then, and now they breed all this havoc. If I recall correctly, as soon as they noticed their precious iPhone 4 prototype was missing, they immediately turned on the alarm. Why didn't they do the same with this product? This movement from Apple mostly looks like they were completely caught by surprise. I do hate Apple, but more than hating Apple, I hate people that do what they do just because they can do it. If the law said they could kill someone they would most likely kill that guy.

[citation][nom]user_ace[/nom]with all the cash Apple has you'd think they would just buy it back from this ebay seller...[/citation]

Apple couldn't really do that, because that might end up being good for someone other than Apple, Steve Jobs must have instilled a Spartan spirit to that company... "Give them nothing, but take from them everything!".

It's alright for Apple to want it back, but if it was me I would never relinquish it. They have no rights to make me comply, and owning a part of Apple prototype history will surely be more beneficial than returning it.

Apple nazies its way around again. When Apple is not hoodwinking gullible subjects into purchasing drm infested nicely cased cheapware at exorbitant prices, it is suing truly creative companies and will even use doctored images of its products to win in court. When it is not stealing ideas from other hardware manufacturers, it is stifling creativity and promoting closed standards that exploit the people and rob them of their money and freedom. Apple is an archenemy of the people and must be stopped. Apple is synonymous with propaganda and deceit. Apple your are sowing hate in the city. Spread the word.

[citation][nom]back_by_demand[/nom]Why has it got a stupid huge external antenna when every smartphone on the planet, even Apples, has one integrated?[/citation]
Maybe because it's a prototype...

[citation][nom]back_by_demand[/nom]OK so because its a prototype we'll just go back to the 90's[/citation]
Most prototypes never get seen by the general public...douche bag.

Seriously, does this strike you as breaking news?

With how bad 3G is in general, I'd much rather have an external antenna to help EVERY LITTLE BIT. Especially when I'm in a building or around a lot of interference.

Apple can EASILY get the laptop, without sending someone from Cupertino, and without the cops. They just have to be the highest bidder on eBay for it! What a novel idea that must be...

Nope, it goes against their Spartan code...

[citation][nom]chick0n[/nom]Apple wants to control everything, and their zealots are happy about.Talk about pathetic.[/citation]
it's not about control...from the looks of things apple did not authorize the sale of the item in question...it was a prototype...this is stolen property....it's like someone hacking into the CIA mainframe and stealing classified materials.

or more likely my scenerio, they threw it away, gave it to an intern to do, he chucked it in a dumpster instead of throwing it away the right way.

someone dumpster dove, and acquired it.

all perfectly legal, and it would be yours.
apple threw a fit and got its way. which sickens me to some degree.
