So... they claimed anything smaller than 7.9 inches is just too cramped.. what does this mean for the iphone and ipod? They're just too cramped? They all run the same basic apps and do the same things...

Actually this is one reason why I don't own a smartphone - I do find the screens too small.

[citation][nom]edgewood112358[/nom]Yep... an extra 0.9 inches on the screen diameter puts the ipad Mini in an ENTIRELY different league than plain old 7 inch tablets... not. Face it apple, the ipad mini is overpriced and offers no advantage over other 7 inch tablets other than the apple software ecosystem (and maybe apple build quality).[/citation]

Let alone that Jobbs the Reality Distorter clearly said "less tan 9.7 is uncomfortable".
So, dear iFans, please, don't forget to feel uncomfortable when enjoying your ipad mini.

[citation][nom]rosen380[/nom]A 7.9" 4:3 screen is 6.32x4.74, 30 sq inches total
A 7.0" 16:9 screen is 5.94x3.71, 22 square inches[/citation]
Your numbers also reveal why Apple went with a 7.9" screen on the mini. It has nothing to do with 7" being a bad size. A movie shown on a 16:9 7" screen is just under 6 inches wide. A movie shown on a 4:3 7" iPad would've been 5.6" wide. By moving up to 7.9", they insured that a movie shown on an iPad mini would be bigger than when shown on a 7" Android tablet despite the aspect ratio being a worse fit.

In terms of comfort and portability, 7" is better. An A-sized paperback, which after a hundred years is the "optimal" size the publishing industry arrived at for one-handed holding, is 7.01" x 4.33". Add a bezel to the above tablet sizes and the 16:9 Android tablet is almost a spot-on match. The iPad mini is too broad.

the tablet is significantly less profitable than other products within its lineup

Let's face it, Apple customers are getting financially raped with their products, doesn't matter which one it is, you can get equivalent hardware that will do the job for half the price (or less in the case of their notebooks).

Just look at their profit margin compared to Samsung, they're selling much less smartphones and making 15 times more money. I'm surprised that some people actually mention this point as an 'advantage'. The only advantage is to the shareholders.
