This wouldnt hold an inch of wter in a real patent court if and when it comes down to it.

This has Free speach violation implications written all over it.

[citation][nom]enki2[/nom]I am tempted, however, to call prior art. After all, Microsoft has stuck adware (some of it unremovable) prepackaged with Windows since at LEAST Windows 95. The whole Windows Messenger thing, as well, was more or less a glorified spam distribution platform, built into the basic services.[/citation]
+1000

shocked that ppl vote this comment down

[citation][nom]wildwell[/nom]It seems like a lot of people are providing negative feedback because it's Apple putting down the patent. Did everybody miss the news the Microsoft is working on a free Ad supported version of Office Lite?[/citation]

Do you work for Apple or something?

There going to find a way to alter it and find a way to get it in a lot of their products while offering no true savings. remember ad supported is more profitable than selling a item directly. for example if if you sell a product for $100 and then you sell a ad supported version for $20, the more the user uses the OS the more money the company makes and it is a endless cash flow as long as the user continues to use it so they will get their full asking price in profits + probably 10000% more because the ad supported doesn't stop when the company has made $100 off of you, it stops when you more to another OS thats not ad supported

Also macs are becoming popular and less secure because it is becoming a worthwhile target for attackers.

a windows user, "help me computer keeps showing random ads" "that doesn't belong there, run these malware scanners to fix it

a mac user calling for help "help me, my mac keeps showing random ads" "it's not malware, it is a feature and no you cant disable it"

As stated above, hopefully this is just to keep others from doing it. Otherwise, they've just pulled out a Desert Eagle and not only shot themselves in the foot, but blew it clean off.

Office Lite is not an OS though, just software, and you don't have to format your computer to get rid of software (unless it's Norton).

It's like a car and a toll road. Your OS is your vehicle and your software is the road; lets you go places (ie do your work, etc). You can go down a free road and have billboards everywhere or you can go down a toll road and have no billboards. What this patent allows Apple to do is place ads in the vehicle instead of on the road. Not saying that they will though.

Erm, hope that analogy made sense...:)

[citation][nom]dannyaa[/nom]For the amount of nerds here, who are suppose to be smart, the lack of foresight coupled with blind hating amuses me...Pender21 is right. Apple is very smart. Most likely this patent was filed not for use in Apple products, but to stop others from implementing something similar - namely their new competitor, Google Chrome OS. It's a patent war. If Apple snatches it, Google can't do it, or they will pay for it. Smart thinking on Apple's part... it's like buying up domain names, but with smart patent ideas. Low blow? Maybe. Smart business? Heck yes, I'd do it.And if Apple does use something like this, you can be sure it would be for a lower priced eco model or something... it certainly would not fit with Apple's main product line up strategy. But seeing as how Apple targeting low end/eco model is not part of their strategy, it is likely this is a simple patent buy up.[/citation]

Nice try, but your entire post is wishful thinking and conjecture. You have no idea what Apple and Google's long term strategy is.

Also...the Google Chrome OS is supposed to be open source. So Google will definitely NOT be including ads in their OS. Even if they somehow did include ads (which would be crazy and pointless for an open source OS)....they could be removed easily.

What again is the reason to pay tons for a Mac, get their ad-ridden OS free, etc?

Buy a cheap PC, install Linux, QED.

Ad-driven OSes is a silly idea, since free OSes already exist.

It was proposed years ago and there may be some merit to it. Considering how much MS software is pirated in developing countries, then this technology may help stop piracy. Throw some ads in the OS may help MS recoup the millions they lose a year to pirates by forcing people to buy the OS in order to turn the ads off.

Just imagine the user experience with a mac in a few years...

The user boots up his mac
The "gong" sound goes off
A voice comes through the speakers, "And now, a word from our sponsors! Please be patient"
Then you hear the happy mac theme song: DOO doo do DO doooooo dooo ....Thank you for buying mac!

Get your free NAGS at reduced costs! But i like the option about users can control when the ads are played. I'd like to play the ads when my PC is off please.

[citation][nom]crazymech[/nom]I think it's a great idea. If I could try out OSX (or Windows) for free in exchange to having an add cover my wallpaper every once in a while, I'd definitly give it a go! the company would earn money, and if the product was good I'll probably buy it to get a full copy without ads after a while.[/citation]
I thought you can use windows for a month, after that you need to activate it to be able to use it(i don't know if that's the case with 7, but in vista and xp you had a month time of using it)

that would be nice.... but people won't buy the OS to get rid of the adds, they will pirate it because it's much cheaper(actually it's free) - my 2 cents
