if i download podcasts through the podcast app (the purple app) on ios devices will it store the podcast files directly in the app and not take up space on my device

If by device u mean smartphone, yes it will take up space on the smartphone, whatever space your apps uses, it takes space from the smartphone total storage pool. It won't take space on your iTunes library on the PC if that's really what ur asking.

yes i am talking about my smartphone. so it doesn't save it directly in the app without taking up memory?

And the app resides in the phone's memory - where else is downloaded content supposed to go other than to your smartphone's memory?

Apps don't have their own memory, no.

Having said that, u may not have to download the podcasts, if u have a pretty good cellular plan, I think u maybe able to listen to them, as you go, stream from the Apple Store, on the go.

i was thinking it was like instagram where the pictures you post and like are not saved on your phone they stay in the app
