The Apple store went down this morning and while the little post-it note on our screens came with the message, “we’re updating the store for you and will be back shortly.” We tried not to get too excited. Could be nothing, we thought. It wasn’t.

They also dropped the price of 32GB of ram $3000 from $9,100 to $6,100. Has gone from a head scratching ripoff to just a laughable ripoff.

Custom built dual Xeon 5500 machine will cost less and you could even put much better video card and much faster drives for this price. And even maybe 12GB of RAM - 6 gigs for each CPU socket. Apple's pricing is just ridiculous for anybody to take care, except the die-hard Apple fanboys, of course ;]

Even with the low-end video cards, these workstations are cheap compared to other vendors. I'm surprised they didn't offer workstation-class video cards as an option, though.

The sum of the parts goes for no more than $2500. Add ~$200 for building it and shipping it and still ~$600 over-priced. I guess the difference is the Operating System.

So why does the mac pro have a mini Displayport? It's not like it's lacking on space..

..but at least it looks like they finally ditched cruddy intel integrated on the mac mini, so that's something positive at least

You would think that a computer that starts at 2600 dollars would ship with a graphics card worth half a crap. And you cant use the "People dont buy macs for gaming" excuse anymore, with OpenCL around the corner and various image/video editing softwares using GPU's more extensively, its realy unforgiveable.

Why use a Server processors, yeap amazing chose for this Macs dirty's work. I just cant realize why the choose Sata discs.A expensive machines need at last SCSI discs, amazing raid controller. And Ecc-check memory. Apple you stink !!

Really .. Very veryyyy less worse. They have interesting options like 32GB of Ram; Raid controller and a Insane Video Options .. Like "4x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB" ..

So trols, don't talk about money or cost. Because this "apple public" need power to precess and stablish with you just have on *Nix systems ..

i was going to ask how much apple charges for filling up those memory slots.. and i dont know who would buy all that memory rather than buying two more systems, or rather a car..

See while the rest of you enjoy the idea that it doesn't do much compared to your build, for those who use these Macs for what they're supposed to be used for, you can really appreciate the power and stability they bring. Price for these kind of computers is not for the novice like a normal PC build, so in a way it doesn't matter. Of course as a business person who would buy these you would want them to be as cheap as possible.

I use four MacPros with all 32 gigs of memory for my render farm and I love it.

I don't get it. Why does apple say they have dropped the price? It seems to me they have INCREASED the price. You can't say you dropped the price $300 if you take an entire core out. Previous 8 core=$2799. New 8 core=$3299.

A good example of their misinformation is their benchmarks for the new Mac Pro...they tested the old graphics cards on the old system, and the new graphics cards on the new system. one on the Penryn based processors, one on the Nehalem based. ANY professional reviewer out there will ALWAYS test 2 different graphics cards on THE SAME SYSTEM, so it just goes to show you.

If I want to play games, I'll simply use my PC, thank you. However, if I want to score symphonic works, there is nothing better than Macs. Logic Pro can use all eight cores in the new Nehalem processors, which is useful when you are decompressing sampled instruments, applying effects, convolution reverb, etc. On my current PowerPC dual core, circa 2005, I am maxing out the CPU, causing my audio to clip. I am very much looking forward to the new Mac Pro computers. Not to mention, OS X, which is based on Unix architecture, kicks butt compared to lousy Windows.
