Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for the comments 7 years ago in my previous thread here. I hope everyone made it through Covid OK.

Back in 2016 I went with the following:

SUPERMICRO MBD-X10DRI Extended ATX Server Motherboard Dual LGA 2011 R3 Intel C612

Two (2) Intel Xeon E5-2620 v4 Eight-Core Broadwell Processor 2.1GHz 8.0GT/s 20MB LGA 2011-3 CPU w/o Fan, Retail

Corsair Obsidian Case

64 GB of RAM

Noctua Fans

GM850 Watt Power Supply Segotep

And I recently put in the 3080 RTX geoforce.

This worked great for 7 years. Started my own architecture practice. It works pretty well with Blender, Revit, Twinmotion, Games, and Unreal Engine.

But of course I’d like to do more. There’s a lot of situations where I walk through two or three Twinmotion or Revit models with clients and engineers.

I think I’m ready to create a monster - maybe about $8,000 - $10,000 budget. What would you recommend? Do I keep any of the parts I currently have? Or get all new?

I started doing VR for my designs. I’d like the PC Build to be able to do ultra graphic settings in Twinmotion. And kill and any 4K gaming.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

well intel released its new workstation platform FCLGA4677 in january 2023
but those CPUs and motherboards are actually not yet available
(or at least i could not find them , some of them are listed on newegg or amazon but they are "out of stock")
the top of the line processor has 56 cores and 112 threads and its MSRP is almost 6K
(but that´s probably overkill) xeon w7-3455 (once available)
with its 24 cores and 48 threads should be more than enough with MSRP at 2,5 K .

amd should release its new workstation platform in september (but again availability may be an issue)

you can also "settle" for a consumer platform but you may run into limits there .
7950x3d would be much faster than your current 2x xeons at everything though .
also it would be much faster for gaming than intel workstation CPUs
(because you mentioned you wish to play games at 4K ultra)

but you can also run into ram issues as well if you try to upgrade to 128gb on a consumer platform
and populate all slots (4x32gb on AM5 motherboard) .

Main question, how is the RTX3080 working out for you? do you have any driver issues or visual artefacts?

If you are happy with the quality and driver stability in your productivity softwares, you could go for RTX 4090. That will give you a nice boost for 4k and VR experience.

If you are not happy with RTX 3080. you might want to switch over to a comparable workstation card like the RTX 6000 ada gpu based on the same chip as RTX4090.

Regarding CPU, @dark_globe explained the Intel Sapphire rapids 24 cpu and current gen AMD 16 core cpu as good options to upgrade. The CPU performance jump from the broadwell era cpu to current gen Intel/AMD is gonna be huge.

So if you confirm on this point, we can look into drafting a partlist for you.

The 3080 works nice. Fast real-time render in Blender. It still feels burdened in unreal engine 5 though.

never had a driver issue or any artifacts

Turned out to be a white build XD

Actually pretty hard to put together a huge workstation. I did similar, but did all black with the architecturiest chassis I could find. Even a lot of overkill in this.

Capability to run Two RTX 4090, however, if you were to go down that route, track down two Nvidia founder's editions. Likely work a lot better crammed together (even a larger case like the Fractal Design Meshify XL might be worth it)

The strange thing is even the Intel LGA4677 mobo like the W790 ones are available in Newegg and amazon. But i cant see the Xeon W2000/3000 or the Xeon Silver CPUs in retail...

Newegg also sells the U14S cooler for the LGA 4677 version

Motherboard is more likely to fail than a CPU, so might make sense to start stocking those first. Also going to be people out there getting their hands on engineering samples.

Thank you all for the builds. I’ll definitely let you know what I end up putting together. I’m also going to try a black and yellow aesthetic. Hopefully it works out.
