Are CPU's meant to be interchangeable?

I've recently upgraded everything in my computer besides my motherboard and CPU. If I wanted to upgrade my CPU in the future, would I have to replace the motherboard or would I be able to replace the CPU but still keep the same motherboard? Of course this is permitting if the CPU has the same socket as the motherboard. For example, I have a Gigabyte X79-UP4 motherboard, which has an LGA 2011 socket. If I wanted to, would I be able to upgrade to a newer LGA 2011 Intel CPU?

Thanks!

Great, thanks. I was looking at the i7 5820k just for fun and noticed that it's a LGA 2011 v.3 socket. Would that make a difference? I have no intention of upgrading my CPU yet, just wondering if the version number would have anything to do with incompatibility

Ah, okay
I see
Well, when the time comes to upgrade my CPU, I guess it will be a motherboard upgrade as well. Might as well pair the two, and might be able to get a great deal for a CPU/motherboard combo
Thanks!
