Are HGST Deskstar NAS 3TB reliable HDDs?

Solution

LOL. That was 15 years ago. IBM (who later sold their HDD division to Hitachi) tried a new method of recording data more densely on the HDD, and it (model 75GXP) turned out to not be as reliable as they'd hoped.

Their next generation of HDDs (model 180 GXP) were some of the most reliable HDDs ever made. (Incidentally, I had a 75GXP, and it never failed.)

Generally, Hitachis (now Toshiba for 3.5" drives, WD got their 2.5" drives) are considered some of the most reliable drives you can get. I should caution however that as with the IBM drives above, the reliability really depends more on the model of the drive, than it does the manufacturer...
