Hi. I was trying to see if i could overclock my CPU, not alot, just to get a bit extra boost, i overclocked my i7 920 2.67ghz to 3.6ghz and it rebootet do to high tempretures. I then switched back to stock settings in the bios, and wanted to to see how high the tempature would get if i stressed the CPU and this is what i got. so i am afraid that something is wrong here?

Nope, 100c is too high. I would recommend pulling your cooler off, cleaning the dust out of it, then remounting it with fresh thermal paste.

What would be a normal temperature for an i7 4790k? I just installed a new heatsink, but I was an idiot and didn't check what my temperature was with the stock one, Open Hardware Monitor says I get an average of 60 degrees idle and up to 75 degrees when playing Rainbow Six Siege on max settings, I have nothing overclocked

The 4790K throttles at 100c, but ideally you'd be well away from that. Seeing 80-90c on the stock heatsink at stock speeds is not abnormal, and won't harm it, but you want it cooler than that if you're adding clockspeed and voltage.

Ah! My friend was telling me that my current temperature was a bit too high so I started getting worried, from my understanding of what you said, I shouldn't be worried about my temperature until it gets around 100, correct?

Aha, thank you so much!!! My temp seems to peek at 70c so it is fine

Thanks man, this helped! also i think the cooler was mounted bad as one of the pins where lose, so it wouldnt have had equal preassure on the CPU. i cleaned it all up and applyed new paste, then made sure that the cooler was mounted correct.
