I recently replaced an old unbranded 500w psu with a corsair rm 650w after i got a really bad smell coming from it but even though i have changed the psu to something of a better quality it seems to still have a very strong smell coming directly from the new psu aswell. I ignored the smell for a couple of days thinking it would go away but its now been atleast 2 weeks since i installed it and the smell isn't going away. i know its coming from the psu because i smelt around my pc case to find out the smell came strongest from the psu.

Back to the question are new psu's suppose to smell like this, i can't really describe it well but its a metallic type of smell, not burning, my pc is very cool with no overheating issues. Also my psu is top mounted would that have anything to do with it? I just need someone to explain if this is normal for a new psu to smell and if so how long should it last.

If you're the only one who can smell it, then you certainly are very sensitive to that smell. A last test that you could perform is to keep the PSU outside of the case and then close the side panel (use whatver you have to sort of seal the side) to check if you still smell it through the case's exhaust fan. The only motherboard component that could cause that smell is the CPU VRMs that are working hard enough to get really hot, but we don't have any info about the rest of your system (motherboard, CPU and GPU).
Does it smell when you have it outside of the case? I mean smell a lot, not just a little like new electronic components usually smell when the paint or varnish gets hot. Is there someone else you could ask if he/she also smells it (don't suggest it does, just ask if there's a smell or not)? You probably are very sensitive to that smell.

Well i have asked other people but they said they can't smell anything. But i still don't think i'm sensitive to the smell because when i open the case the smell is everywhere(strongest around psu area). Plus i can smell it coming straight out the exhaust fan at the back of the pc which is under the psu, so really i think its the fact that air is being pushed through it. Plus i did a test on the psu outside of the case, could barely smell anything and didn't get hot either.
