Are the Corsairs worth the dough?

Thanks for the info., it is greatly appreciated. The upshot is that I will
watch for a good price on the P43.0CGHz, but if I just can wait any longer
I'll go ahead and get the P42.8CGHz. Either way I think I'll be good to
go. Also I was thinking of swapping out the Corsair 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200
for a pair of Kingston HyperX Series 512MB DDR333(PC-2700). The difference
in price is $88, are the Corsairs worth it?

Funny you should ask, I just got done buying some Kingston memory for a
server. And I was about to buy dual channel 1GB from Corsair (512x2) for
a desktop, but don't know how it will work on the Intel board I plan to
use it on.

If you'll be buying >= C processor, 800 MHz, you should really buy 400
MHz memory, PC3200. If you plan to overclock, then I'd shoot for PC3500,
433 MHz. The Corsair 400 MHz will allow you to overclock, though not as
much as the 434 MHz.

Screwed part is memory has gone up quite a bit. I was paying $130 for
Corsair twinx 512MB 2-3-3-6 memory and now it's $160.

Here's some memory and prices from Corsair:

TWINX10243200LL 2-3-2-6 - Cheapest $290
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=1088796/prsrt=1/ut=401ed7ad60fe7917

(one vender has this for $280, but out of stock, watch out)

TWINX10243200LLPT 2-3-2-6 Cheapest $308 (same as above, but with
Platinum colored heat spreader)
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=706746/prsrt=1/ut=401ed7ad60fe7917

TWINX10243200C2 2-3-3-6 Cheapest $288 (just a tad slower, you won't even
notice)
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=1088797/prsrt=1/ut=401ed7ad60fe7917

TWINX10243200C2PT 2-3-3-6 Cheapest $280 (same as above, Platinum heat
spreader)
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=966541/prsrt=1/ut=401ed7ad60fe7917

(** the description at pricegrabber says PC2700, but it's wrong)
(the same "out of stock" vender has this for $250, if you place an
order, I bet you'll receive it when memory comes back down, perhaps
months from now)

I do not recommend Kingston's HyperX Dual 512 MB (1 GB) 400 MHz memory
because of the slower 2.5 latency. Funny, I purchased a gig 512x2 for my
brother months back and I could have sworn it supported CL2 timing,
which is what I have it running at (this is PC3500 434 MHz).

Anything PC3500 low latency from Corsair, Kingston, OGC will cost an arm
and a leg. Over $400 for 512MBx2. Shame. I was paying pennies for 434
MHz memory months ago.

Oh, and not only is it screwed to be in the buying market when memory
has shot up, I lost a Corsair PC3500 512 MB module somewhere in my
office. Would you believe?!

Yes! I believe it. I, as a buyer, ran into a seller on ebay whom I
would not be surprised to find out got it! He sold me a 512 Kingston
HyperX, PC3500--beautifully 'factory-sealed'--only to find out it had been
into & 256 meg generic PC2700 ram replaced underneath the nicely-disguising
heat spreader.
Well, at least he didn't send me PC2100!
Have a good 'un. s

How do you know what the latency of your memory is?

You pretty much have to go by what the mfg states.

For Corsair:
http://www.corsairmemory.com/corsair/xms.html
The PDFs are often out of date.

I would rather spend the money on a better video card or a better CPU.
Unless you plan on overclocking it isnt really worth it. corsair
tends to overclock better than other RAM.

Actually.... my TwinX512-LLPT runs 2-2-2-5 mildly overclocked with a modified BIOS.

the new stuff probably isn't worth it but the older versions with the bh-5
and bh-6 chips might be.

Running a single module at 400 MHz 2-2-2-5 1T is not that big a deal,
but two modules is. The original poster is building a system with dual
channel DDR. It was implied that he was wanted TWINX, "Corsair ... 512x2".
