Are the newer pentiums (G3258 etc) any good?

Right so, I'm unable to buy an i3 or better due to short money and them being relatively expensive here.

So I've found a nice pentium (http:// for an okay-ish price of ~50GBP (on Amazon), $70 on Newegg,

Now, are they any good? Based on reviews I guess they're good, but I wanna know if anyone has one and what's your experience with the G3258 model.

Thanks in advance!

It won't max any game out (except Minecraft). You will be bottlenecked it, especially if your game uses more than two threads. However, it will run games decently, as long as it's paired with a decent graphics card. Best of all, you can overclock it up to 4.0 GHz on its stock cooler, which will easily make up for lack of hyperthreading.

I would recommend saving up for an i3, but if you must have a CPU now, then get the 3258.

Well, if I pair it with say, AMD R7 250 (http://www.asus.com/uk/Graphics_Cards/R72501GD5/), will it bottleneck then?

And I'd get an i3 but I need a new mobo for an i3 too, so G3258 was kinda the only choice.

I have a G3258, and think it is a great budget chip.
To get the most out of it, plan on at least a mild overclock. 4.0 or higher.
My guess is that with an entry level graphics card like the R7-250, you will run out of graphics power first in most games.

The really nice thing is that you have a future upgrade path to i3/i5/i7 and even broadwell if you use a H97 or Z97 motherboard.

Well, my plan isn't really to max out games, I'm just tired of playing everything at 20fps, and the damn lag, so I just wanted to play games without any lag, but if it means that I get 30-40fps on low settings, so be it.
