Hello, I was wondering if these games were appropriate for my child to play. He is 12 years old and frequently plays Call of Duty and Battlefield 4.
Would these games be appropriate?

Grand Theft Auto V
Far Cry 4
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Watch Dogs
Assassins Creed: Unity

Thanks!
Nick

My kid is very mature, and age restrictions don't really bother me. It's more about the content, you see this stuff on the news all the time. Since he is very mature, I let him play COD. If you give your kid some stuff but not everything, they get that feeling that makes them trust you.

Not sure about Watch Dogs or AC Unity, but Grand Theft Auto V is a definitely not something I would suggest for a child of 12.

FarCry 3 was not suitable either, not sure about the 4th one.
Dragon Age Inq has a lot of sexual references and nudity and can even play them out to a certain degree. So guess that is out too.

EDIT : Violence and lnaguage generally does not bother parents, but some things should be avoided, like hate crimes and sex, especially in cases where you as a player can initiate sexual content.

I have played the game myself, he can handle it. Kids aren't stupid, they know when enough is enough, and he is not easily influenced.

Thank you, he really wants these games as he feels left out as all his friends have them. Any great alternatives?

Well, he could read books or go play outside.

Let him play FarCry 4, pretty sure there is nothing but a bit of language and the normal shooting involved. Its not so heavily driven by story and interaction with other people in the world as the 3rd game, and the 3rd one just had one sex scene.

As for alternatives, I do not think there is anything that would satisfy him if his friends are playing these games.

Maybe just get one for him, as mentioned Far Cry 4 to satsify for now.
I think AC Unity should be good too, but I can't confirm as I have not played it yet. Ill ask around.

Just REALLY suggest avoiding Dragon Age Inq and GTA 5.

Thanks! I was also wondering what age to get him GTA 5 at as he really wants it and all of his friends have it, around 13/14?

Okay, well to actually think really hard about that question "Are there any great alternatives?"

Grand Theft Auto Alternative: Saints Row? That game is more offensive and less realistic. So no.
Far Cry 4: Crysis series? A FPS based in tropical environments. It's similar enough and critically acclaimed.
Dragon Age Inquisition?: Well, it's got sexual content, all games similar to it are made by the same developer and also tend to have that content as well. I can't think of an alt for this one.
Watch Dogs: It's GTA with hacking. Can't think of an alt.
Assassins Creed alt: I literally can't think of a similar game like Assassins Creed....

I'm sorry for failing you.

No BS though, has your kid played Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare? An online 3rd person shooter game that's very fun, addictive, not to mention family friendly.

Thank you for trying to suggest. Does Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare still have a playerbase? He really likes to play online with some friends from school.

Just found out, AC Unity should be fine too, except for violence and a bit of language, it has a few verbal reference to sex, so nothing that kids are not exposed to every day in anyway.

GTA at 14 sounds okay, was about the time I started playing it, and i turned out fine😀 . But its your call.

As for a nice online game that he can share with friends :

Nothing more fun than League of Legends to play with friends.
Its its free unless he wants some unique cosmetic stuff.

Thank you, I may buy him that or Far Cry 4 for christmas. What age should he be to play GTA V? He has IV.

I just edited my post. Ill just repost. :)

Yeah no. It's not about how you feel or how mature a 12-year old kid is, it's about the psychological impact certain things have on kids. If you let your kid play games like BF4 (specially online) there's pretty much nothing you should keep from him as I can PROMISE you he's had it all.

Why do you think age restrictions are there? To make the game look "wicked"? No, it's because companies and psychologists spend millions on research to study the impact of certain content on young people. You may not realize it but it's bad for your kid, period.

Wow, really. So, if I had a kid who was extremely immature and easily influenced there would be no difference to my child who is mature? If I let my child play BF4, he's seen it all and I let him play everything? What parent would let a child watch Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill? Of course age restrictions exist for a reason, but children need to know you trust them. You give them that little bit of trust when they are 8 and you let them ride to the park. That helps them trust you and listen to you. It's not extremely bad for him. He won't go and join the army and slaughter everyone just because he played Battlefield. Media doesn't work like that, 'PERIOD.'

So you would let your child actively control a murderous gangster and kill innocent people, ride over cops and beat whores to death with a baseball bat but watching Kill Bill or Pulp Fiction (passively) is wrong?

It's not about trust, it's about boundaries. Kids get to do whatever the hell they want these days way too easily, which is the problem with the world in the first place. Parents think you should treat them as grown ups, but the problem is they are still only kids, mature for their age or not.

Okay, first. I live in Australia, so we have a censored version for GTA IV. Less blood, no prostitution or strip clubs, sexual content or extreme level violence. He only plays Free Roam with friends, and I monitor my child's gaming frequently. My child knows the difference that this is a game. Not the real world. But I have to agree with your second paragraph, last week I played CS:GO with 7 year olds. 7 YEAR OLDS! What parent allows it at 7? I allow him to play CS:GO but at 12 years of age. Also, children do have some mind sets similar to adults but not as enhanced. I think you should allow your child to have that little thing so they know that you trust them, but now I understand the reasons to not buy the other games, such as GTA V. Thank you, but I am still thinking about AC:U and FC4.

If the kid is mature and you raised him well then no problem. I grew up on videogames, played em when I was waaaaay under the age restriction and I'm not a serial killer nor a rapist. I can separate the virtual world from the real world, its all about parenting.
If you can teach him that actually beating up people with a baseball bat is bad, then he wont do it, even after playing hundreds of hours of GTA5. Sure there is also excessive swearing and nudity in those games, you should talk about those too with your kid. Again its all about good parenting.

Thank you for your input. I really think that he is mature enough and he can seperate the virtual world and the real world apart. I don't want to get him it for Christmas, as he badly wants Far Cry 4. Thank you for your input!
