Are windows updates necessary

I have recently downloaded windows 7 and everything seems to working fine however the guide im following is telling me to install windows updates but it doesnt tell me how and when I check for updates nothing happens it just loads but this makes me wonder if these updates are necessary at all because my computer is working fine how it is.

They are ABSOLUTELY necessary so as to protect your data(use any online banking? 😉 ) from all sorts of threats online.
Honestly, do yourself a favour and just install 10. It'll take alot less than the time it will take to get 7 SP1 upto date.

Thanks but i wanna stick with win7 however when i go to do updates , I check for updates but nothing happens just infinite loading

If you plan on using the pc to connect to the internet and don't want it compromised within the 1st 10 minutes the answer is yes. There should be a ton of updates for a new 7 install, go through control panel>system security>Windows update, then check for updates. It will probably take a while for the initial check, when the 1st batch of updates are installed repeat the process because there will be updates to the updates. Keep checking until there are no more updates.

For windows update to work on fresh windows7 sp1, you will need to install update KB3112343 manually
Stop and disable windows update first, and enable after you have installed KB3112343 and rebooted.

Without this update windows update causes 1 core to get utilized at 100%, hogs about 1GB of ram and never does any updating.

Yes it will take about A DAY to update a fresh 7 SP1. It's not infinite loading. In 3-4 hours you'll get a couple hundred updates. The whole process will take about 5 restarts followed by long looking for updates followed by installing them etc.

This is absolutely true. On a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1, windows update runs forever without updating. Windows 8.1 fresh installs have the same problem. Microsoft has a fix, KB3112343 for Windows 7.

You must install the update mentioned to get Windows Update working. Trust me, I just spent a week on this, and discovered the fix independently. Then I searched this forum for the upgrade number and found that others have already posted. So I'm just echoing, you must do this update on a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1.

"UPDATE: Microsoft recently released updates for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 improving the stability of the upgrade experience for Windows 10. Please ensure you have the update installed for your respective version of Windows:

KB3112343 for Windows 7 and KB3112336 for Windows 8.1"

Microsoft needs to publicize this issue better to save us time and grief. Contrary to the above statement about merely improving stability of the upgrade process, this patch solves a serious problem. It corrects a total failure of Windows update. If you have this problem with either 7 or 8.1, you also can't upgrade to Windows 10 either, so you would think Microsoft would be more frank about this issue if they want people to move up to Windows 10.

So just do the appropriate update if Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 won't update. This is urgent. You need
KB3112343 for Windows 7 and KB3112336 for Windows 8.1.

I have no antivirus, Only use Windows Defender, keep User Account Control disabled, Turned error reporting off and disabled solutions, When I was younger I went through a curiosity stage (as all boys do) and had a lot of those sites at my fingertips...

Never got a virus, never had a BSOD or crash of any type. Using windows 8, use to have XP, tried Windows 10 for 5 months (didn't like the forced updates). Still never had protection or viruses. Had the same desktop and laptop for 4 years.

Viruses are hyped as much as registry cleaners are... THEY DO EXIST though, they are just not something you get unless you are going to sites even you have never heard of and mostly if you download things. Larger companies are better targets for hackers wanting to prove they still got it and have bragging rights for a big score. I won't argue about it.
