I've been a Windows and Apple user for years. From P4's, Power G3's, Xeons, Apple Silicon, etc. I've been an iPhone user for YEARS! Lately I've had so much respect for even the early Apple Bionic processors on phones like the 5s, 6s Plus, etc.. I have about 20+ years experience with video editing NLE's and I'm just surprised how ARM based mobile video editing apps have just always behaved differently than other markets. I'm aware of codes, encoding, decoding, 4K-8K cams, RAW, etc...
It's gotten to the point where I can rely solely on apps like CapCut which works so well with ARM based architecture. I don't care much about the Asian world and their trade-offs, techs, but CapCut works on iOS12! lol. Surely I'm not going to use the new gen effects, AI heavy effects on mobile, but general 4K rendering off CapCut with a 6s Plus, 30 minutes video, you should get a render just as fast an old i7-990x..
Now no offense to the gaming market or its users. I know that the gaming market continues to do breakthrough graphics for new 8K TVs, so I see why particular power is needed, but for me, and many others, ARM based tech like Apple Silicon or Intel Ultra is more than enough for me where I don't need to rely on some dedicated app GPU on some x64 Windows etc..
I recently sold my backup laptop Asus B3 Flip with an i5-1235U processor which I needed for some Premiere Pro projects on the ''mobile'' go. I like Flips aka 2in1 convertibles because that's just the way of the future and it compliments my use with iPad Pros etc. I used the iPhone 15 Pro Max with Capcut rendering a 45minute 4K video and using some of its new effects, and it rendered the whole thing in 7 minutes whereas the i5-1235U rendered in 1.35 hours using x64 Windows CapCut. I do know that Intel Ultra CPUs, when downloading CapCut, you're using the ARM based versions which act and render like Apple M Silicon chips.
So I wanted to ask you guys. Should I ditch the idea of getting a budget Lenovo Ideapad Slim 5 2 in 1 with an i5-13420H and just go straight with an Ultra for future proofing and using Microsoft's Store ARM based apps? It's my understanding that the Ultra's can compete with Apple Silicon, and the PC market still provides dedicated GPU's as options for gamers and intense editors? In my opinion I think many buyers are being exploited because new ARM based processors, as proven by mobile for years, will be able to do everything and anything.
Where Apple has failed are in 2-in-1s. They don't want to bridge the gap between iPad Pro and Mac OS. Point is if Apple had a 2in1 for Mac OS I wouldn't even bring up PC based off my work. Don't misunderstand me, I respect the proprietary markets for engineers and gamers etc which is why we have variety....unfortunately
