Getting artifacts in games recently, just had a motherboard upgrade - dfi dk 790gx , first one I bought was faulty :< but this one seems ok. Just wanted to know what could possibly be causing them, sometimes its worse than other times, eg sometimes you'd only see one artifact every now and then, and other times the whole screen could be full of them.
Cpu is running at around 58C and gpu 45C

Amd am2 5600+ X2 2.8ghz 90nm
Dfi dk 790gx m2rs <- 45/65 nm ( even tho cpu is working on motherboard, is having a 90nm cpu effecting anything)
ati palit 4870 1gb dual edition
4gb (2x 1gb) apacer ddr2
WD 320gb hdd 7200rpm
650w auriga PSu

note~ that my motherboard has an 8 pin aux whereas my psu has only a 4 pin aux, i've heard that there is no problem just having the 4 pin sit in there but would I be getting reduced power to components which may effect performance on a noticable level.

Any suggestions as to what may be the problem would be sweet as.

The board should be backwards compatible with your CPU. I think they are just saying it works with newer CPUs.

I have never heard of Auriga before, but based on the stats found here:
http://www.xpcomputers.co.nz/views.asp?hw_id=2621
I don't think it's a very good PSU. It is at best a very old design.

Having said all that, artifacts are normally a sign of an overheating video card, or a failing one. Power CAN be a factor, but it's not the primary suspect here.

If your CPU cores are at 58C at idle or light load that would be a problem. 45C is fine for the GPU, but again we want to know what it is under load.

HWMonitor will keep track of your max temps:

Might be a good investment to upgrade my psu sometime then :S
Hw monitor is telling me that (this is while playing cod 4 maxed everything) CPU = 54-64C GPU = 42-48C ACPI = 60C

Also have a problem running the program CPU-z it starts loading then hangs and the pc locks, cant do anything unless I restart.

I wouldn't worry about CPU-Z, it isn't always compatible with every system... but make sure you have the most recent version.

I have to admit I'm somewhat new to ATI, as many of us are. I have noticed that artifacts with ATI cards are sometimes just driver related... but I have not seen more than very occasional artifacts under those conditions.

I recently had issues with my 4870. It was not so much artifacts, but here's what I did - I removed the installed drivers and did a registry clean up, then I installed the full 9.2 drivers.

Opening a support ticket with ATI can be quite good apparently. I haven't actually used them yet but I've heard good things.

Yeah, odd thing though, cpuz was working yesterday on this setup, and now just wont work. Also did some reading and turns out that auriga isnt such a hot brand :|

"Some brands to avoid are:

Aspire
Auriga - AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Clipper pro
Codegen -
Coolmax
Generic
Hairong
Honli
Logisys
Mad Dog
MGE / XGbox
Omni
Powmax
RexPower
Ritmo
SHAW
TT
YoungYear (OEM for MGE / XGbox and Aspire) "

Guess I failed to do some research before I bought the power supply.

I will reinstall drivers though, hope that fixes the problem.

Thanx for the help nevertheless, never encountered this problem b4.
