I'm repurposing an old Dell XPS 420 into an HTPC and thought the ASRock Intel Arc A380 Low Profile 6GB would make a good graphics card for 4K video playback. Once the card was installed, though, the PC wouldn't even try to boot up so I'm guessing it's just too old and limited for Intel Arc A380. Is that right, or should it be working?

Dell XPS 420
- PC 375 W
- Intel® Core™2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz
- Expansion slots- 3 x PCI - 1 x PCIe x1 - 1 x PCIe x16 - 1 x PCIe x8

You're trying to populate a GPU into a system that lacked any form of UEFI BIOS. Chances are you're not seeing display but the system is booting to the OS due to the lack of said UEFI support from motherboard BIOS, apart from my assumption that your PSU is incapable of delivering power to the system overall.

In all honesty, you chose the wrong platform to drop that GPU for 4K playback.

issue one no uefi bios probly not going to be detected.

issue 2 bandwidth restrictions

issue 3 no rebar support.

you would be best with nvidia card

GeForce
GTX 1650 anything newer probly wont work

all new cards need a uefi bios

Thanks much @Lutfij & @beyondlogic! I was expecting to return the card to Amazon but wanted to do my due diligence before giving up on it, and it's good to know why (UEFI BIOS) the newer cards won't work in that old PC. I'd been looking at secondhand GTX 1050s (and now GTX 1650s) but thought I'd take a chance on the Arc A380 to see if I could get AV1 support. Thanks again!
