ASRock X99 Extreme4 - Picking a motherboard for CPU Intel i7-5820K with 2011-3 socket for SW development + gaming

Hi guys, I'm looking to build a new PC for my SW development and gaming needs, and so far I've managed to pick a CPU, which would be Intel i7-5820K. As for memory, I'd like to have 32GB, and given that the CPU uses a 2011-3 socket, it'll have to be DDR4 (which I guess limits the search to boards that have 4 slots for 4x8GB.)

As for the gaming needs, I don't really plan to buy any high-end GPU (probably something around $150-250), which means I don't need a beast motherboard that can handle 4 GPUs, but I'd like to be able to upgrade to something decent, or possibly have two GPUs in the future without having to change the motherboard (but this is not a hard requirement.) One of the candidates here is MSI GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card, but I'll probably make a specific thread for picking a GPU once I have the motherboard figured out ... or maybe it should be the other way around? I'm not really sure.

The last thing is the price range, which should be around $200-250 if at all possible. I don't think I have any other requirements for the board, but I might be missing something?

Based on my initial search, I've found one possible candidate, which would be ASRock X99 Extreme4 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard. As for a case, I've picked Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced ATX Full Tower Case, which given its size should allow all the upgrades I can think of (but I'm not sure if it's ideal for my board/CPU selection.)

The motherboard looks like the best choice there is below $230 for an ATX build. Even features ultra m.2 via pcie3 x4 for the quickest ssd's you can get right now.

As for the case... well, that ain't that easy. It's generally nothing I could answer because it really comes down to personal preference and nothing more, given it yields enough space and sufficient airflow. If the HAD 932 suits your taste, go ahead. I personally wouldn't spend more than $50 on the case, but that, once again, really solely comes down to personal preference.

A 970 GPU will give much more performance while being only a bit more costly than the 960. As for the mobo if you're not all that into colour matching your rig then it's good enough. I personally find the MSI Gaming 9 ACK and the Asus ROG ones to be nicer boards in looks and overall performance. But they'll be costly. So unless you want to colour match your rig, The AsRock mobo is good enough.

I wouldn't go extreme 11 at all. Too much unused features. The Extreme4 is good enough for his needs.

If someone has any use for all the features you get by boards more expensive than $120 (z97) or $200 (x99) he won't have to ask the question which motherboard to choose here. Performance wise, there's no difference, so unless you somehow find a use for the additional features, the money goes down the toilet.
