Asrock Z77 and I5 (non-K) Overclock help.

I made the mistake of buying the non-k version of the i5 3570 when I was building a budget gaming system and notice that with the Asrock BIOS set up there is a One Click non-k OC option.

Is it ok to use the One Click non-k option and still use the stock fan or do I need to get a new fan (looking at either the Arctic Cooling i30 or Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo -- have the Antec 300 case)

And yes I know I am an OC noob for not getting the K chipset but I havent done this in about 10 years and the store didnt advise me the K was better and I thought I was just saving £50 and kept the cost down to £900 (had to buy everything inc. monitor etc.)

Anyway any advice or pearls of wisdom would be much appreciated.

Personally I wouldn't OC the non-k version as you don't get much more performance and risk stability issues. You have to OC using the base clock (BCLK) which will usually yield about 100 Mhz OC. Other things are linked to the BLCK which in lies the stability issues that may arise. The stock fan as far as temps are concerned will work fine albeit I don't like it for noise.

My advice:
Return the i5-2500 and get a K version.

I have had the chip for more than the 7 days now (from www.ebuyer.com) and unable to return it. I will live with what I have as in all fairness its playing my games etc well and mostly on ultra settings and just regret not doing a little more research and being less stubborn in regards to Overcclocking, which I said I would never do yet find myself tempted...

In that case then I would suggest you reset the CPU back to stock, undo the One Click non-k option. Its not giving you much(+ 3% Mhz) with potential crashes. If the CPU fan noise is bothersome then get a better cooler. The CM 212 I linked above is a cheap but decent cooler.

Don't change the bclk. You can still raise the multi 4 above the highest stock turbo which in the case for the 3570 is 42. Nothing else needs to be changed though you would want to look what auto set your vcore to. And what temps you hit when gaming.

Ok ignore all the don't overclock posts I have this same chip on an asrock extream4 and yes do overclock it no risk works great totally worth it. Go into the bios and see if you have the nonk overclock option if you do turn it on and you are done. I did this and it now runs stock at 4ghz and will overclock 1 core to 4.2 and 2 cores to 4.1... Now for real what can i not do with this speed.... I would love to have k chip but got mine free so that is that and I am loving it went to this from an 1090T. This is much better for gaming. FYI this is a 17% overclock not 3% and why would you not do this for free speed... I would suggest the evo 212 you could do on stock but would run hotter than I would recommend.

It's actually 4.2 on 1 and 2 cores, 3 cores is 4.1 and 4 cores is 4.0. It's also 11% for 4 cores, from 3.6 to 4.0.

Overclocking a locked CPU is a difficult proposition as you are limited to a few options. When overclocking an unlocked CPU you want to use the clock multiplier and not the BCLK since the BCLK will affect other components along with the CPU.
With only being able to raise the clock speed a small amount you will have to choose if it's worth doing and if your able to play games at high settings then maybe it's not. In either case it may be a good idea to pick up an after market cooler in case you do attempt some overclocking.

k1114 you are wrong I watch what my cores are doing 4.1 on 2 cores and it never goes to 3.6 at all ever. Goes from idle 1.6 all the way to 4.

Let's not get into an argument over what the CPU can do , should do and does, the point is that the OP has asked a question and we should do our best to help. As we all know very well that no two CPU die silicon is the same and will actually give a different clock result using the same settings. If overclocking is attempted here then what ever the result is will be what he can get.
