I know, I created similar threads a lot, and will repeat the question once again, this time rephrasing it.

My card heats up a lot when I play AC:U on minimum. In BF4 at ultra (no aa/af) the temp is roughly 65-69 (rarely, but happens). When I play AC:U however, I get temps of 73+, a couple of times been 78 (haven't been alt+tabbing). So, the questions are:

I think that the lower the card works, the longer it will serve. Am I right? Anybody tried running AC:U with this card for hours? How high the temp was? On low. Would you recommend me to keep the temp below 70 degrees C or it's OK to have it at the temp the game runs at?

I mean, I'm planning to upgrade the parts not earlier than in the next 4.5 or so years, so I want to play during all that time.

Solution
when you install msi afterburner it will install the updated version of rivatuner with it its an excellent program i am using it right now with two asus dc 2 r9 290x cards it works great it will support your card
Seems to be a good answer, but... not complete. If anybody could say how the temp really is in the game, I'd appreciate that. Because I might forget about the temps, and the card would just burn...

Well, not burn, but running at 90's (AC:U is a VERY heavy game - there are a LOT of people walking the streets) is very bad, isn't it?

no its not can not stress enough that thats what its suppose to do if you feel its to warm create a custom fan profile and take it up to were you think the fan is loud enough to deal with the 290 default fan wont go over 50% so try taking it to 65 thats what i have my 2 290x cards running

It's true that AMD allows Hawaii to run at ~95c. However, I personally wouldn't let one run that hot. Your under 80c temps are great, nothing to worry about. But if you like, you can download a program like MSI Afterburner and setup a custom fan profile and also monitor temps, etc.

I just now ran the ASUS GPU Tweak, and it showed me that the VBIOS update is out. Should I install it or leave as is? I know I should update drivers, but flashing BIOS... For motherboard, it's recommended to flash only if you have problems with BIOS (well, UEFI, who cares...) but what about VBIOS?

Does only MSI Afterburner allow to setup a custom fan profile? Also, can I force to quit AC:U or any other game/program if the temp gets high to the temp I select?

The card is designed to throttle its clockspeed so it doesn't "burn". If you want to see your max temps while running a game then run a program like MSI Afterburner or GPU-z or HWMonitor while running the game - they will display the max temps of your GPU.

you can set the card to a thermal limit if your using the quiet bios but the card has built in ability to clock itself down when it gets to hot its what it was designed to do but one thing that can help is to use riva tuner and set a frame limit this will stop the card from trying to do anything over say 60 it actually does a very good job at helping with temps

Hmmmm, I myself probably would not update it unless something wasn't working right. But it's up to you, your card probably has dual BIOS in case something goes wrong. Asus GPU Tweak probably lets you set up a fan profile, I dunno check it out. GPU tweak should also monitor your max temps while in game.

Rivatuner was last updated in 2009. As a result, it may not (fully) support my card, but thanks for advice.

The card does have dual BIOS, one is "quiet" and another is "uber" which is, I think "above" in German. Which gives 1 extra FPS and lots of noise. So I'm not updating it then. So, I guess I learned everything I need, but I still will leave this thread open if you guys mind sharing other programs that would help me stop games when card reaches the set temperature. Thank you.

78C is really good temp for an R9 290. You have nothing to worry about. These cards are made to run up to 95C and AMD says, it's perfectly normal. AMD cards just run a lot hotter then Nvidia in general.

You're welcome, hope it all works out. If you really are worried about the card getting higher than a certain temp then just set up a fan curve that ramps up very sharply when the temp exceeds your desired maximum. That way you will hear the fans start spinning like crazy if the thing starts getting hotter than you like.

But really man those temps are great, I really wouldn't be worried. My Asus DCII 6970 is four years strong - gaming temps have ranged from 70s to low 80s (when I get lazy and don't clean the dust filters :) ). But both fan bearings started dying a month ago so I had to do some handiwork with a saw, drill and some 120mm radiator fans I had laying around - it actually runs cooler now than when new. My point is - your 290 likely won't die from GPU heat, it'll be more likely noisy dying fans and/or obsolescence that kills it off.

Yeah, after downloading MSI Afterburner and setting max temp (hopefully, it works - before, after playing for, like, 45 minutes to an hour, the temp was 78, now it's 73, and I can play all day. I'm not sure if it's Afterburner or what, but it works. BTW, I set the card to work on 1000 MHz, I think it was 1024 or so, so not too much underclocking, but still.

with that expensive PCB that AMD used even 97C with the VRMS at 110C~ the card will still give u 6 years lol

and the noise wont increase that much unless you have a reference maybe 2DB give or take

if u keep the card bellow 90C it will live a long long time
