Ok, I need a computer upgrade. I want to run assassins Creed Unity but am having trouble deciding on a mobo, CPU, Video Card, Ram and CPU Fan for the build. I don't think my current system will run the game. I'd like to get an Nvidia Gforce GTX 700 series video card with 2 Gigs Memory,
For Unity:
AMD fx-8350 (4.0) could do a 3.5 w overclock
RAM 6 GB (I have 3 x 2gb DDR3 1066)
8 GB recommended
Video card: AMD Radeon HD 7970/R7/ R9 series Nvidia Geforce GTX 680 / 700/ TITAN Series.

What I have Currently:
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R
CPU: Intel i7 Core 920 @ 2.67 GHz
NVidia Geforce GTX 260
Ram: DDR 3 (3 x 2GB 1066)

Would like to keep this under $500 if possible. The Video cards that are support for this game use PCI-E 3.0 my current MOBO has 2.0 or I could just upgrade the CPU and Video card for now and do a complete upgrade in 5 yrs.
Recommendations? Options?

Solution

mixing and matching ram isnt a good idea . better to get 2x8 gig matching sticks

there are plenty of options at reasonable prices in the link.
pc partpicker is also a good place to source cheap gpu's as they can shop from multiple sources so they can send you your card at the best prices. often even...
So you are suggesting a different CPU? I thought about going with the intel i7 series (3770) is listed as supported. I don't have to play this in Ultra settings, I was happy playing all the other Assassin games in 1200 x 960? Res. So I just want something that looks good and plays with out stutters.

honestly i would stick with the cpu you already have its perfectly decent and will oc to 3.3 without any issues on stock volts. which is plenty fast enough.
as for the gpu throw all your budget at a gtx 970 and you'll be ready to rock and roll.
as for the pci-e compatibility there will be zero issues.
pci-e 3 is just a minor upgrade to pci-e 2 to give more efficiency but the difference is only about 3%
3.0 is backwards comparable with 2.0

I was talking about the GPU. Your CPU is fine.

GTX 970 is not possible because it's a $500 budget build, unless you can somehow use $150 to buy everything else, just saying.

I suppose that could work, although I'm not sure if you'd need 12GB, and I "Never" recommend 8GB, but in this case, I think I do, lol.

Thanks Lone, that's the best solution so far. Amazon has the 970 for 316.00 (damaged package but everything there) they also have DDR3 1333MHz Ram 8G stick for 76.79. So both are less than what I was planning for a new MOBO and CPU etc. So how do I overclock the CPU? I have a rough idea but don't want to screw things up.

Thanks

Umm...actually Hex suggested the 970, lol. But I'd get new than damaged, you never know what it has been through. To OC, you'll have to go to BIOs, but I'm the wrong person to ask for OC because I hardly do any at all.

My Bad! Thanks Hex, Actually on the GPU, only the box is damaged. I have DDR3 1066 CL9. would the 1333 DDR3 8g work with (2x 2G) of 1066? That would give me a total of 12 if it will work. Now I just need to know how to over clock my CPU. I know I go into Bios, but don't know what settings to use.

Thanks Guys (and Gals if there are any :)

Maybe one of these guys will answer about OC, but if not, you could try to read this thread I was in, he explained step by step to me or if you wanna ask him more questions, apparently he's an OC expert. Just scroll down a bit to find the steps, I hope it'll help even a little bit :)

They're 'shafted' only because of the way they chose to engineer their graphic cards... About 10 years ago, when I had paid for a premium model and some shaders, or something, didn't work (or, whatever it was :)), I switched-over to nVidia && never looked back.

I've been running teh 3770 Ivy for about a year now and it's been nothing but stellar... However, 1920 x 1080 all the way..:)

as for overclocking there are plenty of tutorials on the web and i have a i7 920 that i run at 3.6 on stock volts.
with a very basic oc. it really is as simple as manualy setting the volts to 1.18v and bumping the bclk to around 166 to 180 in bios along with a few other minor tweeks. but thats for another topic.

Thanks Hexit, That helps a lot. I didn't think the Ram would work after I thought about it, so will look for either 2 x 8 or 3 x 4. With the over clocking the cpu, adding the video card and ram, I'll be good for another 5 years! Thanks everyone for the input. Oh and I think that 1920 x 1080 is plenty of res for any game. Besides I only run one monitor and if the new GPU doesn't have a connection for the Monitor I might have to upgrade that too....Oh Shucky Darn! 😀

Thanks all, better advise here than from a computer repair guy and the Geek Squad from Best Buy! You Rock!

Got 2 x 4 G Ram and a single 4 G stick, plus the Zotec GTX 970 from the link you posted for 415.00, now going to overclock and wait for the Ram & GPU to arrive 😀
