I just upgraded my rig to include the following:

ASUS 970 Pro Gaming/Aura
SanDisk X400 512GB M.2 2280

On boot, the BIOS doesn't show the M.2. Nor does the Windows installer. It's my first go on M.2 and I am pretty sure I installed it correctly, can't imagine it's too hard to mess up putting it in the slot, pushing it down and popping in a screw.

Since this is a pretty new motherboard for ASUS, there aren't many resources for troubleshooting this.

Anyone know why it wouldn't be showing and possible ways to troubleshoot?

Solution
From board's specs:
1 x M.2 Socket 3, , with M Key, type 2242/2260/2280 storage devices support (PCIE 2.0 x4)

While the SSD is SATA.
You need a PCIe one.

Thank you for pointing that, I guess I read the specs wrong when I bought it. So how do I take advantage of the M.2 slot on the motherboard? What kind of M.2 SSD do I need to get?

Just to update this thread on my findings - the PCIe 3.0 that I posted a link to was not able to be used as a boot device from the M.2 onboard slot, however, within Windows I could find it and format it and use it as storage. From other research I did, only the PCIe 2.0 M.2 SDDs is what will work, as you originally suggested. Thanks!

Thank you!
Yes, I just learned about the different flavors of these. M slot, B slot, SSD via SSD, SSD via PCIe, and some even go through the damn USB ports and regular SSD ports.
I learned about an adapter that will make the wrong one convert and work as the correct one. I am getting that. Because I got a super fast 512 GB one for like 130.00. Those are 285.00 and up.

M.2 (NGFF) Blade Gold Finger to M.2 PCI-e 4...

This made my day.

Thanks!!!
