Question ASUS B550E issues

So was wondering if anyone else has been having issues with the ASUS B550E motherboards? I am on my second one. My first one, one of the RAM channels failed.

It was under warranty so I sent it back to ASUS for repair under their worthless scam called the RMA program. When they got it one of those silver PCI-E clips was missing so they sendt me a replacement board (refurbished) and tried to charge me almost $400 for it.

I ended up reporting them to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and ASUS refunded me the money. Now two years or so later I am having a new set of issues...

The motherboard is super slow I get the ROG logo screen with the hit del / f2 to enter bios but it takes almost five minutes from the time I hit f2 for it to go into bios... I am getting intermittent F3 motherboard codes (which indicates ram issues) but my ram is fully compatible.

The system only boots intermittently and I have been trying to troubleshoot for four days now... In the HW monitor my CPU indications are normal idle temp around 38c shows the 16 cores and 32 thread... When it does go into bios all four RAM chips show as normal... I am at a loss...

Has anyone else encountered this? I bought this motherboard because I thought it was high end but have been disappointed with it...

When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:

For a while since the pandemic, Asus have been lackluster in most, if not all departments. They are also known to command a higher price tag when compared to other brands in the same product stack. To rewind to your point, you should document everything you send out(or are having issues with) so you're not wrongfully blamed for a damage you didn't create. Helps to make sure the packaging is wrapped up properly with bubble wrap.
 
So to answer all your questions and explain a lot of things:

My setup:

1. AMD Ryzen 3950x CPU
2. 64GB DDR 4 Patriot Viper RAM PVS432G360C8k 16x4 chips
3. ASUS GE Force RTX 3060 12GB GPU
4. Motherboard ASUS B550E (replacement /refurbished one)
5. Primary Hard drives 2x 12TB Seagate Exos X16 256mb cache 7200 RPM use one as my C: the other as my E: storage
6. 1x 1TB Timetec SSD that I use as a cache drive running off Primocache
7. 1x 4TB Seagate 7200RPM 256mb cache HDD backup drive...
8. Dell monitor dont have model handy at moment but it is HMDI and V-sync runs off the GPU
9. Using a 1600W mining PSU for my power supply
10. HP DVD-RW drive
11. Rosewill Thor full tower case
12. Thermal take Frio Extreme CPU cooler

OS is Windows 10 Professional 22H2

I have had the current ASUS B550E motherboard for about 2.5 years... I started noticing issues back in November when Windows was failing to update... At the time I suspected it was just a SW issue with Windows and didn't suspect any issues with my MOBO. But this past week is when I started seeing the bios act super slow ect...( Used to be I had to act fast to catch the push f2 option)...

The troubleshooting I have tried so far:

1. Tried several different versions of BIOS to include 3404, 3607, and 3611
2. Tried resetting CMOS and replacing battery
3. Pulled out CPU to look for any bent pins or damage (none found)
4. Tried different RAM configurations
5. Pulled out all USB items
6. Was able to boot intermittently from an old C: drive for periods of time but computer would auto shutdown...

As I mentioned this is my second ASUS B550E motherboard...

Also I do want to ask an honest opinion... Since the only thing I can determine this problem to be is my motherboard... Going through the logic... I can see my monitor and GPU work (get screen input) My hard drives work as when I could boot I could get data off of them and BIOS still shows the boot partitions as options to boot off of; when BIOS does start it shows all the RAM and the CPU indications seem normal as best I can tell... The only culprit I can think of is the motherboard especially with problematic / slow BIOS as BIOS to my understanding is part of the MOBO itself... I see on Walmart .com that Newegg is selling a "refurbished like new" MSI B550 Tomahawk MAX WIFI for $90... Should I just say to heck with my ASUS B550E and get that instead??? Admittedly I am very frustrated right now...
 
No overclocking... With just a single stick of memory it is a hair faster as in takes two or three minutes to enter the bios menu as opposed to five with the four sticks... But bottom line extremely slow... As I mentioned before Tuesday when it would boot I would see that BIOs entry option for one or two seconds tops... Before it would go into booting Windows... The latest is it now seems to have messed up both my C: Drives (my current one and my old one I kept in storage as a "life boat") as both now ask for a Windows disc when I try to boot up; so I made a Windows bootable USB and when I tried to boot of that the computer shut itself off.... And when it does try it is moving at the pace of an "almost dead snail"...

You've tried different configs of ram, but have you actually tested the ram? You can do so by making a bootable usb drive and putting memtest86+ o nit. Then boot from it and run the test.

If you show any errors, your ram is faulty.

When you updated the bios, you have to clear CMOS each time. That includes upgrading the bios, or rolling back. I know that can be a pain to take the battery out every time (which means prob the GPU too), however, clearing CMOS each times is important.

I'd prob stick with just 1-2 sticks of ram while troubleshooting. 4 DIMM slots occupied can put a load on the SOC. It might actually be worth it if you can get into the bios, to bump the SOC voltage up a tad.

Usually (prior to Tuesday) when I did bios updates in the past I was using the Armoury Crate AI to do the bios updates in Windows... None of the tutorials out there said that was a requirement... I will see if I can get this thing to do the RAM test but in all honesty the systems keeps just powering itself off at this point... As for voltages in BIOS I did set the RAM voltage and freq to 1.35V and 3600MHZ which is what is on the label of the RAM itself...

Your 1600w Mining PSU - What brand and model? That could be the issue if your system is powering off. How old is it. Given it's been mining and running 24/7 for god know how long, I'd want to rule that out.

Could you get a lend of a decent 650w PSU to test?

Edit: Any time you do a bios update it writes microcode to the bios. By not clearing CMOS, you risk remnants of previous microcode hanging around, and this can cause all manor of bugs.
 
Correct everything storage wise is running off SATA...

The PSU is something I got years ago not sure on brand (ebay out of China) but has always been reliable... It doesn't shut off while in bios these auto shut offs seem to occur during the post bios boot sequence... The most recent one when I tried to boot off a USB drive... and no I have never done any mining at all with any of my stuff.... I just bought the supply which was being sold / listed as a brand new power supply for mining... But never used it for that purpose to be clear,,,

Like I said I am way more suspicious of the motherboard than the PSU... While yes it is a mining grade power supply, I bought it brand new and I have never mined at all... and the shutdowns seem to be triggered during the post bios windows boot sequences... When the computer was running everything was fine... These issues shutdown issues usually seemed be occur during Windows boot... Also the reason I bought this supply when I did was my previous GPU was a R9 390 which was a massive two plugs power hog... When it died I replaced it with my current GPU...
 
Two motherboards with the same problem is rather unlikely. That being the case, the logical steps are to look at the common components used with both motherboards. That is what we are doing.

If you are convinced the motherboard is the issue, then change it and let us know how it goes.
 
I think that is probably what I will end up doing... I tried to pull out my old 775W PSU from my last computer and unfortunately it doesn't have enough plugs to do what I need it to do... Specifically The two power plugs to the mother boards are 4 and 8 pin; and my GPU is 8 pin... It wont fulfill all three... The two plugs that can do 8 one is a six and two the other is a four and four; but no additional set of four and no additional options for eight...
 
Ok my new plan of action... I just ordered a new PSU and a new mobo (the MSI one)... When the new PSU arrives I will test it out and see if that fixes my B550e if yes then just return the mobo... If no then open up and replace the B550e with the MSI mobo and hopefully that fixes my problems... Guess I will let everyone know in a week... Good news is if it is the B550e then I see I can subsidize my purchases by selling the B550e on ebay for parts...
