For the past month or so, my pc has been crashing when gaming. It happens at random times, sometimes after 2 minutes, sometimes after 30. The games boot and run well, but whenever it happens the monitor goes black, sound loops for around 5 seconds then cuts and the pc becomes unresponsive and I have to restart it. The monitor displays an error message telling me that the signal is out of range.

I have tried overclocking, underclocking and maxing the fan speed when running games, but nothing has helped so far. It only seems to happen in graphically intensive games, it is frequent in BF4 and Tomb Raider (both running maxed), while I can play games like Hearthstone and The Wolf Among Us with no issue.

Would really appreciate some help!

Solution
I have the answer. Go and reinstall the drivers, however this time you need to do a custom install. Only install the essentials like hd audio physx and the graphics ofcourse. Don't download the 3d extra's. They might be causing the problem. This worked for me, I hope it works for you as well.
I had the same problem with my HD 7870 until I upgraded my PSU and got one with more amperage on the 12V rail and a much higher efficiency (as this was an old Ultra LSP 750 Watt that had only a 76% efficiency).

Try a better power supply or monitor your voltage on the 12V via GPU-Z

Intel Core i5 4670K (3.4GHz), ASUS GRYPHON Z87 Motherboard, ASUS Geforce GTX770 DirectCU II Edition, 2GB, Corsair CML8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3, Corsair TX650M Bronze Modular 650W Power Supply. Running Windows 7.

I have the exact same problem with my gtx 770. It has been happening since 2 days ago when playing dayz standalone. It is really annoying. It could be the recent graphic card update form nvidia. I already reinstalled but with no luck. Some people say it is because the refresh rate is set too high when gaming, however all my games run on 60 hz with should not give my asus monitor any problems. Im hoping there will be a fix very soon.

Solution
Hi, I'm facing the same issue, monitor goes "out of range" after a random time of 3-20mins running Dota 2 from steam. Tried uninstalling the 3d extras, turning off the nvidia audio driver (from some where else it says its this problem).

Still facing this issue where the only thing i can do is to restart the whole system. Help please! Thank you in advance!

Running on: i7 4770K 3.5Ghz *mb LGA 1150; Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GBx2 1866Mhz C9 DDR3; Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H motherboard; Plextor M5 Pro 128GB SSD; WD 1TB 7200rpm Black 64MB; Asus GT770 2GB DDR5 Overclock direct CU ii PCIE; Monitor Asus IPS MX239H 23" 1920x1080; with H100i on WINDOWS 8 64bit.

I had been experiencing the same problem! It wasn't until I purchased an nVidia-branded GTX770-2GB that the system stopped freezing during gameplay. I play Aion and sometimes after just 30 minutes and other times after several hours, the screen would go black, the sound would stutter and then the system would become totally unresponsive. Only a power cycle would bring my PC out of it.

Recently, I sent the ASUS GTX770-DC2OC-2GD5 in for RMA repair. I got it back after little over a week and was very disappointed to learn that they did nothing to repair it. The customer service rep said that they ran several benchmarks and tested the card, but could not get it to fail. This is so frustrating to hear, especially since I paid $30 U.S. to ship it to them.

I know that other people are experiencing the same problem and am very surprised that ASUS has not taken a proactive approach to investigate and find a solution to the problem. The card still causes the system to freeze!

Here are my system specs:

ASUS P9X79 Pro Motherboard
Intel Core i7-3820 (3.6GHz) CPU
960GB Crucial M500 SSD
32GB Corsair Vengeance RAM (8GB x 4 DIMMS)
ASUS GTX770-DC2OC-2GD5 Graphics Card
850W RAIDMAX RX-850AE (80 Plus Gold) Power Supply
Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit)

Although I checked other threads, I could not find an answer. I just got my computer about a month ago and whenever I play heavy games (BF4, AC4, Watch Dogs..), the game freezes and I hear a noise that lasts for few seconds, then the computer shows me a blue screen and says it is restarting. It only happens during gaming.

I have tried uninstalling my graphic drivers and re-install the essentials only, but that did not work. I noticed that if I play low resolution Assasin's Creed 3, the game does not crash. I dont want to return my computer because all my college work is on it. Is it the GPU or CPU or what? someone else must have had this issue. Thanks for the help.

My computer specs are:
OEM INTEL CORE I7-4790K 4.0 GHZ 8MB INTEL SMART CACHE
SUPERCLOCKED EVGA NVIDIA GTX 770 ACX 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E

SOLVED!!!!!!
"For me and me friend with the same card (the GTX 770 4GB) had the same problem as you.
We tried everything and nothing worked. In the end the solution that fixed our problem was so not that hard. It worked for both of us anyways.

In the Nvidia Control Panel (the one you enter from desktop), go to Manage 3D Settings, in the Global Setting tab find Power Management Mode. If that is set to "Adaptive", change to "Prefer Maximum Performance".

That was everything we had to do in the end. Drivers don't matter.
I hope this works for you, if you haven't found a solution already."

It has worked for me too!
