Solution
The GTX 780 Ti is faster than the GTX 970.
The GTX 970 has more VRAM, but there is no game that currently requires more than this at 1920x1080.

While you find people claiming Battlefield 4 requires more than 3GB, this is only with mantle.
You can see the GTX 780 Ti with 3GB VRAM out-performing the AMD 4GB cards with mantle in this benchmark:

Watch Dogs also requires at least 3GB of VRAM for ultra textures:

There are also two new games coming out that recommend more than this, but they haven't been released yet so the material may not be correct...

Buy a second hand 780 ti, that's what I did! I was considering a new 970 but the Gigabyte G1 was $150 more than what I paid for the 2nd hand 780 ti! In another year or two I'll sell the 780 ti (probably get most of my money back on it as well) and get a second hand 980 ti for a lot less than current prices. In some cases benchmarks are not quite accurate. Unfortunately AnandTech GPU benchmarks don't show the clock frequencies of the cards tested anymore. So you could be comparing results from a reference card (clocked up to a few hundred Mhz lower than a non reference card) with another card that has a factory OC! A decent overclock can easily achieve 10 to 15% better performance.

The 780 Ti used to be the fastest in 2013, but I would go for 970 since it is newer and even though it has less cores, it uses the Maxwell architecture which means that the Maxwell cores on the 970 are stronger than the kepler cores on the 780 ti. Also, the 780 Ti and 970 prices are not the same. The 780 Ti is around $600 while the 970 is around $300. You're better off going for a 970 than 780 Ti since there is not that many left on any shopping websites. There are a few benchmarks where the 970 beats the 780 Ti. Also you can do SLI or maybe overclock the 970 to have more than 780 Ti performance. Since the 980 Ti is the king of the jungle now and the 980 (the 980 is faster than a 780 Ti) is the son of king, the 970 is just like the 980 but 20% slower. I do not recommend a 780 Ti. It's a waster of money and power. 970 FTW!

Can you sell me one of your 780 Ti's for $350? If not, how about $400?

lol, three times he now mentions the price?if thats such an issue that you put the price before all the advice here then no bother going any further.Seems like youve already made up your mind.
