Idle is supposed to be around 30. Anyone know whats the deal?

Also Anyone running these in SLI that can tell me expected temps?

And finally does anyone know if it's okay to have my sound card sandwiched between two cards?

No, get your sound card out from there. I think your case doesn't provide the needed cooling. The stock SLI GTX 970 Idle temps are 33 C only http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_970_sli_review,5.html, your temps are high. Are you sure both the GPUs are idle when you checked the temps? Did you checked them right after booting up?

That 33 is a lie. Since the fans are not working on 20% on idle like most of the other gpus, idle temps are little high on that gpu. I own a strix GTX970 aswell and my idle never passes over 45. Doesn't go below 42 aswell. Yourl idle temps are not normal. Even my full power temps are not passing 65 mark with 42% fan speed. Maybe you got poor airflow chase? Mine is not great aswell i must say.

What is your core clock running at while you're getting those higher temps?

I have the Gigabyte G1 970, and I usually idle between 24-28... and my core clock is usually at 135 (with random spikes, as normal). When I downloaded the newest Nvidia driver, 344.48, I noticed my core clock wouldn't drop below 900 and my idle jumped to 35ish. Switched back to 344.16 and it's back to normal.

Which driver are you using?

Hey guys thanks for all the replies. I'm starting to think it's just bad airflow in my case since I have things on top of the case and the case is pushed up against the wall.

Just to clarify i'm not running SLI right now, but I am getting a second card soon.

Anyway in the mean time I just up'd the fan to 50. It still pretty quiet and now the temps are idle at 33.

For those who say that 33 isn't a real temp of this card, a room mate of mine has the same card and gets idles at 33-34.

Also my case is a corsair carbide 4000R mid tower.

Yeap I have the same cards is sli, top card is idle at around 60 but when I say idle I mean just desktop stuff, bottom card is around 30, seems a number of people have the same temps with these cards so I wouldn't worry about it. When the fans kick in the temps dive and full load is always fine at around 70, Dont worry about it, fans are off in idle remember, also the top card drives the monitor and uses more power

I had Strix GTX 970 SLI in a half case, phantom 410, with 7 corsair fans (120-140mm) which I push to max fan speed. However even in idle, the temp for 2 cards never below 50 while the temp of CPU i7-4790K is only 40. I think it is normal because when I play games at 4K resolution and max setting, the temp never higher than 75. Beside, my PSU, EVGA 1000P2, somehow is very hot and it right under the second card.
50-60 is totally normal. Use them for few years and replace with higher class, nothing to worry.

Check your GPU Tweak Software. If you have it on 0dB mode the card will idle at around 50-60C. The fan is just off. Turn 0dB mode off and watch the temps drop back down to the 35C range.

FWIW - I had this issue today. MSI 970 idling at 60C when it used to idle in the 30s.

Used GPU-Z and noticed that the Core Clock was 1113MHz under no load in windows desktop. That's way higher than it used to be.

I unindtalled the nvidia display driver, rebooted the machine. Let windows auto-detect the hardware and install an older driver, rebooted again.
In GPU-Z the Core Clock is now 135MHz idling in windows desktop - MUCH more like it used to be.

I let Geforce Experience install the latest driver, but I used the "Perform a Clean Install" option in the installer (just to be safe).

Once rebooted everything is running right again. Core Clock 135MHz in windows, idle temp is 35C currently.
Had my MSI 970 almost since launch, never noticed an issue before. Guessing the drivers needed a 'clear out'? Or an issue created when upgrading drivers? Sounds like it was stuck in a higher "p-state".. either way, all fine now :)

Hope this helps someone :)

lctrgames the driver is fairly true 2 days ago anew driver update notafication ,i installed. The temp up tp 48c.i notice the vramm display was on zero.I download that driver from desktop return to 28c and vram active

Odd. Now granted I have a full tower. The 780t but my pair of strix idle at around 28c and maxed out Witcher 3 4k/40+fps (no hairworks) the top card never goes over 69c. That's at about 63% fan speed. These are stock clock. I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. Those two buggers are strong enough that no OC is needed.
