ASUS GTX 970 STRIX Power

I saw a few questions like this before, but I didn't quite understand. MY GTX 970 has 1 8pin slot, I only have a 6pin connector on my power supply.
I plugged in just the 6 pins and it turns on, its currently running right now.
I'm assuming that if I try anything intensive ill damage the hardware? or is it fine?

No it's not a good idea. A 6 pin is designed to draw 75W and one 8 pin is designed for 150W.

You need a proper power supply with an 8 pin , the adapter is a bad idea.
