Hey all. Got my asus gtx 980 recently and having some temp problems. my idle temp is constantly 61c. isn't this pretty high for idle? when gaming it goes up to 70c. is this normal? im a bit worried. I know it has some feature that that fans will only start spinning when it reaches a specific temperature. My fan speed is set to auto basically all default. i got all the latest drivers. also myy previous gtx 680 also by asus didnt have this problem. my room temp is 65-70. i got a aftermarket cooler for my i5 3570k if thats important. also i dont really want to mess with the user define feature which lets you customize when and at what temperatures you want the fans to spin couse im a pc noob. any help would be appreciated.

Solution
If you have the STRIX model then your GPU should be getting warm at idle with the 0db fan profile built into the cooling. The fans don't even turn on until it his 65C so that is completely normal.

i meant 65 Fahrenheit. so again i should be good right? 70 on load and 61 idle sounds normal?

If you ran a gpu intensive program before and closed it, then yes expect your idle temps to be high. The fan will stop turning at a certain temp so it won't cool down to 20-30C.

so is 61 the temp that the fan stops spinning? im just worried that i will couse some damage if my card will constantly at 61. also i haven't been running any gpu intensive programs/games. for example my pc was idle for about 2 hours now ant the temp is always the same. 61.

I'm confused with what you mean by 61F ..

The graphics card will shut down to protect it at 98C it doesn't mean it will not work anymore it's a safe shutdown.

71C seems too high for idle. My 980 is at 39C degrees as I type this. I have EVGA, and Precision X. With whatever monitor/control software you're using, double-check fan speed.

Is this a reference card model with exhaust blowing out of your case? If not, what are your CPU and MB temps?

not 71. 61 when idle. ehh its asus strix 4gb card. has 2 fans and pretty much it. and yea my old asus gtx 680 ran at like 40 idle. which is what i was expecting from the 980 to run at. thats why im so worried. been saving up for this card for a while. gpu tweak utility says that fan speed is at 33. but its honestly all over the place. it was at 33 than it was at zero than at 33 again. its set to auto. also i just played far cry 4 for a little and had the temp graph running in the background. while playing i was at 54. than i quit the game and went back to 61.

oh ok. thanks for the evryone. i feel better.

No problem!

I've got a Strix 980 too. My idle temp is around 44C (have my side panel open and I live in a warmer country) and running Unigine Heaven, spikes up my GPU temp to 80C. I did try playing around with the User defined curve for fan speeds and managed to keep the temp around 71C with fan speed up to 80% (kinda noisy though)

My question is, what if I leave the fan speed settings on Auto and set the Target Temp to around 70? does GPU tweak adjust the fan speed to maintain that temp or does it alter the GPU clock speeds to reduce the temp? I don't mind the fans running high to keep temps down.
