OKay, here goes. Trying to install a new ASUS GTX 980 TI today after replacing my R9 290.
Display is blank. Power is connected correctly. Asus strix light comes on and stays on . Fans blow for a couple of seconds then turn off.
Psu is corsair cx600 (600w).
Cpu is Xeon 1231 v3
MOBO is ASROCK h97 fatality.

Writing this now after reinstalling R9 290
Also latest motherboard bios.

Solution

does your motherboard have integrated graphics? if so, remove the 290 and uninstall all drivers for graphics and let them be reset back to generic windows defaults then install the 980 and then install the geforce drivers and see if that works.

also, if you were plugging your monitor directly into your new 980 before installing drivers for it that may have been the problem. be sure to plug into your mobo first then install drivers then turn off system and plug into the gpu then boot up

it does have int. graphics but as far as i know the cpu xeon 1231 doesnt allow int. graphics. also wont show display when connected to motherboard and gpu uninstalled.

have also installed drivers from disk and still no luck

you're mobo does have integrated graphics. virtually all mobo's have them becuase you need them in case you have to fall back to it when and if your gpu fails or you just don't have one yet. your mobo will require intel graphics drivers. try to install them and get them from your mobo maker website.

EDIT- Sorry, I thought you said you didn't have integrated. lol. disregard the first part of my response

No worries. thanks for the response. Its just the cpu that doesnt allow it. i have a corsair cx600 for a psu. i wonder is that the issue.

your cpu should not stop your integrated graphics from working. the only time a cpu would interfere is if the cpu itself had integrated graphics on the chip. but your cpu does not. also, I would recommend upgrading to a 750w power supply just to be on the safe side. I would recommend this one. Use the promo code at checkout to drop the price to $67.99

On the subject of your integrated graphics not working, this would require a little bit of troubleshooting because it should work just fine.

Pomo Code: 15NOW

Maybe. The mobo won't display either. First time I've needed to try it. But anyway how will this help me. The PSU i have is a concern for me. Asus logo lights up but fans die after 5 secs

Like I said. You might need a new PSU with more wattage when it comes to using the card with close to it's full potential. Although if it lights up but the fan dies after about five seconds it might be a power supply issue however it lights up. Does your 980 use 2x6 pin connectors or 2x8 pin? Double make sure you've properly connected it. You might need more juice though. But the reason you would default to the integrated graphics is so that you can properly uninstall and remove all drivers pertaining to GPU's and then install the official drivers for your 980 from www.geforce.com. Get a better PSU and see if it'll work and also get a better PSU in general to support future upgrades/additions to your rig. If it still won't work right see if you have a friend who has a gaming rig with more juice and ask them to let you see if your GPU will work on their system (it would help too if they are using an NVIDIA card) If it wouldn't work in another system that meets the requirements for using that GPU then it would be a faulty card and you would need to return it for a replacement.

Its a 2 x 8 pin. Tight connection.double checked.

I reinstalled my R9 290 and uninstalled all drivers with amd in installer and ddu. I also ran ccleaner just to be sure. Still didn't work. I did all this before posting this problem.
I'll try and get a new psu today or tomorrow and return with the results. Future proofing with a stronger PSU is not a bad idea in general. Thanks. Talk soon ☺

oh my god. Did a LOT of googling. read something about pci3.0 slot on h97. Turms out if i use the higher pcie slot it uses pcie 2.0 which ive always used for my AMD R9 290. I took one last go at it before i did the amazon return function.
The bottom slot is the pcie 3.0 slot which the gtx ti HAS to be in.
It was a very tight squeeze and very close to the PSU fan. Had to take out 2 drive bays to get the arse of it in.

BTW the H97 WILL NOT allow integrated graphics with a cpu that doesnt support it. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/329086-30-what-supported-integrated-graphic-mean

Well that's new. never heard about the 2.0 and 3.0 thing, but then again I don't have the worlds most extensive experience with the z97 mobo's. I kinda skipped that stage and went straight on up to z170 (not to say I haven't used a z97 but I haven't used one with the 980 TI so that probably came into play with my lack of knowledge). But I assume it's working now? If so then I am glad to hear it and now that you have the new PSU (which btw is more than you'll need but it never hurts to have wiggle room) you can easily add in another 980 TI down the road and even some extra fans and LED's or even a basic water cooling system (depending on your case of course)

Ye it's working 100%. Still don't get constant 60fps in dying light though. Hahaha

Still having problems. it wont display in pcie 3.0 x16. in gen 3, gen 2 or gen 1. This is the same slot i had my r9 290 in. Using a h 97 fatality perfoemance mobo.

yet it was working earlier? hmm.... Check out this forum post and read a ways through it. try some of the simple driver installation fixes it talks about and if that doesn't work then you might have to RMA the card. If you end up having to RMA the card then be sure to ask for a new one not a refurbished one.

BTW this forum post is for the GTX 970 but it will apply to your 980 Ti

Well it's still working but on a pcie 2.0 x4 slot. Ideally i'd want it in the pcie 3.0 x16 slot as it's capable of that. Worried as it's either a dodgy motherboard bios or a fault in the card pins.

well if you end up having to replace your mobo I would recommend this one as one of the more affordable ATX boards.

The way to find out would be to pop the GTX into a different mobo (like a friends) that has PCIe 3.0 and see if it works. If it does then it's your mobo. If it doesn't then it's your card.

t's working on another monitor. Haven't moved it to another mobo. It's working thru hdmi. And now its working with my original monitor on the pcie 3.0 x16 slot. Today when i reset the bios again it also uninstalled the geforce drivers which are now on 2.9.1. Gpuz tells me on pci-e 3.0 x16 @ x16 3.0. im gonna update to the latest geforce driver and hope for the best.

ive just realised that is the latest geforce driver although the geforce experience app wasnt there when i hooked it up to the brothers monitor so i had to reinstall from the disk to get it back.
im gonna hypothesise that the move to the pc monitor somehow jumpstarted the nvidia driver to kick in and display correctly the pcie 3.0 correctly with the card.

im gonna restart now and see if it sticks.
it works......although it shows no display and then pops straight into the windows login screen bypassing the bios splash screen for some reason.

works on latest nvidia graphics driver. still skipping biosthough.

If you reset your BIOS and it skips BIOS screen then that means your BIOS is set to skip the slash by default. If you want the boot screen to show then you need to go into BIOS and change it.
