Pretty much my issue. I am trying to overclock to a simple 4.4 for now. Works fine if I keep ram/memory on auto and not force 1866 and timing....but i'm worried about timing being an issue while gaming, it is showing 11 cas latency. as soon as I retry this oc and add the ram changes it goes to a system check and doesnt wanna go to windows.
I did do
1 enabling DOCP in the BIOS pick 1866 and then raise the DRAM voltage...same
2 Auto fill all and raised the CPU-NB Voltage +0.1V to give the CPU memory controller a boost

I do have an extra set of G.skill Ripjaws X Series DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) 8-8-8-24
wILL THIS ONE WORK BETTER W/ MY MOBO THEN THE 1866 SNIPER?


Case- NZXT Phantom w/ 3x200mm 2x140mm 3x120mm fans
Mobo- m5a99fx pro r2.0
Ram- G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB DDR3 1866 9-10-9-28
CPU- FX-8350 cooled with H80i with Noctua NF-F12 fans
GPU- EVGA GTX 780 FTW 980MHz x2 SLI
PSU- EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 G2 80 PLUS GOLD Certified 1000W

Hey custom, so sorry I haven't been online all day and didn't see your message or post, but if you figured it all out I'm glad you broke through with it, great job!!! I've never actually touched my RAM when overclocking all that much though. The most I've done is make sure that it's performing at the speed advertised. I've never spent time going into the timings so I don't think I would've been of much help to you. Sorry, if I would've seen your post I would've researched it too and tried to find you a solution. ok, added the ripjaw and same. so I took off the timings...i'm assuming being i'm overclocking timing needs to be on Auto??? Prime was throwing errors like crazy, even shut down on mew/ timings so I'm running prime now w/ ram set to 1600, timing auto, and just 210 to test it at 4.2...sorry to bother. so it that right? leave timing alone??

oh and cpu/nb 1.20v it read 1.62v...I also did 1.38 on cpu voltage ...it said in bios it was stock at 1.32(didn't seem right) Please any input would help me...Thanx

Self-test 640K passed! on blend stress test w/ 4.2 with high 73 degrees on HWMonitor..ok?

Passes at on blend stress test w/ 4.3 with high 75 degrees on HWMonitor?? cpu voltage 1.38 NB 1.2 still. sorry just keeping a log for myself too. helps me

About my timing I read to actually adjust the timing with voltage bumped up to 1.525 or 1.55...is that right? and NB up a little too?

Update:
4.4 went like this... Froze once while doing Prime95 had to force reboot, but passed second time buuuut hit 81 degrees. I didn't set timing...yet. waiting for feedback, but I did Dram voltage to 1.525v and NB to 1.22v. Kept cpu to 1.38v. Took some pics if someone can help me.

Besides, solving a problem on your own feels pretty good, am I right? It give you the knowledge to help others or for the future and, for me at least, gives me a great feeling of accomplishment :) Most of the information and advice I give on Tom's is based on experiences I've run into that have forced me to research the topic and find an answer. Let me know if you need anything else and I'll try to reply as quickly as I can but I am currently on Spring Break so I haven't been seeing much of my electronics unfortunately :)
By the way, the soundtrack on that video is priceless XD

Thanx Samoan, I kinda felt like a crazy person talking to myself there for a little bit....."wilson!!!" My timing was all off and every time I tried to overclock it just the slightest with the timing set it became unstable...couldn't even get it to go to 4.2......was wierd. Now sitting at a stable 4.6ghz. Temps seem fine. Gamed last night w/o a glitch or a crash

Awesome, overclocking complete!!! Haha I read your thread all the way down and it had me laughing, but it is good that you did a step-by-step process for anyone else who may run across the same or similar problem :) I'm glad you got your overclock "Wilson" haha

Samoan, I backed down from 4.6 to 4.5. Temperature on torture test were too high for me. Going to artic silver my h80i today and try again. I have extremely good cooling. Multiple noctua and 3x200mm for exhaust. My question... Does cpu voltage have an effect on temps high or lower?

Sorry for the late response, I haven't been home but happy easter!!! And yes, to answer your question, CPU voltage is one of, if not the, biggest factor in CPU temps. The 8350 should reach 4.6 easily with your cooling system but watching the voltage should help. Many people tune back the voltage when they first receive install their CPU to find a voltage that powers it enough, but does not give the processor more power than it needs at stock speeds. Basically, AMD picks a stock voltage and clock speed to go with each processor that fits every chip safely. So, try to run your overclocks in prime at a lower voltage and when and if a core fails, then give it more juice. That's how you'll find a solid overclock, it is more time consuming, yes, but that will yield your best results. Turn the voltage down, run prime, if a core fails give it more juice, if one does not, then either bump up the clock speed or bump down the voltage depending on what results you want to see, and repeat this process until satisfied!!! I hope this helps you, overclocking can be frustrating to find the time for but it allows for free performance gain and with your cooling, as I've said before, you should be able to gain quite a bit. :)

Yeah, that's what I thought. The vid I watched he had it up to 1.43v as i then did too. But running prime temps were high for me. I'm actually... Right now..lowering it little by little and testing it in prime lowering loltage. I'm now testing down to 1.39 vs. The 1.43 he had me at. 4.0v ran fine for a half hour. My temps are still upper 70's though? I hear people having really low temps with fans but odd low temps, like they are reading wrong one...like the package temp on HWmonitor. I'll keep on lowering it and update.

Did thermal artic silver 5 today and tomorrow I have 2 3000rpm noctua fans comings vs. The 1500rpm I have right now.so hopefully those help.have no idea how people use the stock corsair fans on the h80i....loud.

Awesome, those should make the computer experience a lot better(silence is golden :) ) and doing that will be healthy. Just be sure not to go over 1.5, personally I don't like to pass that threshold for most CPUs. Upper 70's with a watercooler and all that airflow doesn't seem right. A lower voltage should hold the clock. Maybe your problem is not enough thermal compound or something because 4ghz is the stock clock and shouldn't put the card near 70, especially with your setup. Unless HWmonitor is somehow not scanning it right. Very strange hmm

Here is a pic of my airflow. I have 2x 200mm NZXT fans as exhaust on top and on the side door I have 1 x 200mm exhaust and 2 x 120mm fans as intake all NZXT. Going to put the f12's on the door though when I get the 300rpm ones. NZXT ones have very low airflow.

Your setup is awesome and the cooling is as well. You have a lot of positive pressure which is good, better than negative. The only thing I'm wondering about is that your side door fan being an exhaust(going out of the center of the window) may be counter-productive as the air coming from the front travels to that area and then up, but, then again, there is hot air coming off of the GPUs directly next to it, so I think your cooling is good. I might consider adding fans to the bottom of the case so that the front and bottom are intakes(maybe the side door as well) and making the top back and the top exhaust. That way fresh air comes in and then the exhaust fans pull that air up and over all of the parts and removing the hot air that comes with it. Either way though, your fan setup is going to be plenty to keep the system cool!!!

For the CPU temps I would take Blackbird's advice here ( all hail blackbird lol http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2300382/vishera-fx8350-safe-temp.html ). Basically, use your bios to check cpu temps because, as I said, 70s are very unusual and unlikely for the 8350(and most other CPUs). 60-65 is where it should sit at a good overclock when its performing to its fullest. As he says, the CPU would throttle down anywhere above that. As a comment, many would probably see your system and freak out, wondering why you would spend all that money on cooling instead of putting it into an Intel CPU, but these fans and watercoolers can be used for future builds and upgrades and the 8350 is a beast for the price so I say keep on keepin on :)

Thank you...I will read that blackbird thread. I guess I am the type of person that is loyal to what they have always had, always have had Nvidia...always bought BFG's, and now EVGA's all the way and never owned intel

Here is my door. 2 bottom is intake and 200mm is upper, close to the cpu above the gpu cards. Think this is a good intake/exhaust for the door myself.

Haha, loyalty to AMD, I can't complain :) Seeing the door in the picture I take that back, what you've got going is great for airflow...I'm jealous. And why not, I feel the same, every day I look inside of my computer like "hmm I need to add this this this and this into there" so when you have the money it's hard to do anything but satisfy your questioning mind XD

Thank you by the way, I need someone to think to besides myself...both programs seem to be in sink w/ each other I believe. Tell me if I'm wrong. I am going lower and lower on my volts and I notice the temps doing the same. I'm now at 1.355v and tems are low 70's...72 average.

Ok, that makes much more sense!!! Whew your CPU might've been melting at 78 for all I know! Under AMD FX-8350 the package temperature is the temp you need to be watching. That should be showing, and appears to be as those are CPU range temps, the collective temperature of all of the cores. One reason I don't like software temp monitors as much is because of this, they are confusing. For example, I have three temps in the "Temperatures" Category of the motherboard where it says CPU and mainboard. I have tmpin0, tmpin1, tmpin2 and I determined them to be my cpu, northbridge, and motherboard temps, but the problem with HWmonitor is that it is not consistent throughout systems. "CPU" seems like it would be, if anything, the Northbridge as it tends to run hottest in systems but even then, your cooling shouldn't allow for that heat. My system has only the two case fans that came with it and a hyper 212 evo on the CPU, but my highest temp(the northbridge) is usually around the mid-high 60s. It could be the northbridge but all those fans blowing on it should be keeping it cool. Also(probly stupid but with your number of fans and I may as well be safe), try to make sure that your room is not warmer than 29 degrees C so that your pc doesn't become a gaming refrigerator. But seriously, if that 76 degree temperature is correct I am blown away because although it is widely considered safe at those high temps(with a good motherboard like your own) I can't believe that my Gigabyte 970A-UD3P cheapish motherboard with almost a full 1Ghz overclock at 1.43V with two case fans and a Hyper 212 Evo is lower in temperature!!!

yeah, when I look at my corsairLINK program it displays temps and it is always lower then the core temp. Right now I ran it at 1.34 and 1.35v and had errors on both. It is running at 1.355v at 48deg fine right not and passed 2 tests w/o error.

Final question.......
If this holds and temps look good should I keep it there or bump it to 1.36 to be safe if temps are good?

What is your overclock at right now? I don't remember you mentioning the clock speed recently

I am right now it is 4.5ghz w/ 1.38 volts at 22.5 on core ratio 1.5v on ram..... auto on CPU/NB manual volts @ 1.162 (seen people do 1.2 on NB but also saw to auto???? any input) and is around 50 deg package running blend on p95. I guess after this, if I feel randy I will crank up a notch or so now that i'm not so worried about where my temp is.....I guess I just wanted to get comfortable with the right voltage and not just plug a number in there that I watched on a few youtube vids. going to run it over night and see in the morning. Then I'll benchmark it tomorrow night
