ASUS Maximus VII gene problem. Not sure what it is.

Yesterday I built my new gaming computer. Unfortunately I simply didn't have the space to be able to test the components outside the case, so I installed them straight away. I also worked on a carpeted floor as the entire house is carpeted-however I did have an anti-static wrist band on and was constantly touching the metal of the case.

I tried powering on the system but nothing happens. The fans on the PSU don't spin. However some lights on the motherboard come on- the start, reset buttons and the republic of gamers logo (which slowly blinks). I'd like to do the paper clip test on the PSU however all the cables are black, so I'm not sure how to test if the PSU works. Someone has suggested resetting the BIOS but I'm not sure- I will point out at this point that I bought this board second hand. Another issue that has also been raised is that the sound card- SupremeFX impact II- can apparently cause issues.

My system consists of
CPU: Intel i5 4690K
Motherboard: Asus maximus VII gene
PSU: XFX XTR 650W modular
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB

Any help would be much appreciated it as I'm really not sure what to do.

My day keeps going from bad to worst. I tried to remove the 24 pin plug but it would not budge from my motherboard. I then tried to remove the motherboard itself and one of the screws would not come out. I then proceed to try and reinstall the screws only to change my mind but now I have 2 screws that will not come out from my motherboard. They turn and loosen but don't come away from the standoffs/ motherboard.

I managed to make some progress! The 24pin connector finally came loose and I used the paper clip still and can confirm that the PSU definitely works. So it seems to be an issue with the motherboard.

Try connecting the 24 pin power cable and some case fans to the motherboard. Remove the 8 pin power cable, graphics card, memory, all other PCi/USB cards, front panel wires. Start the board by pressing the onboard power button. See if the case fans do spin.

Will that screw that can't come out from the motherboard be an issue? It can't tighten fully but also can't come out.

I'm sorry but I accidentally selected your answer as the best answer on my phone when I meant to click reply instead! THE ISSUE IS STILL UNSOLVED FOR ANYONE READING THIS

Okay so I followed your advice and made some progress last night. I removed the RAM, SSD, and all the cables bar the 24pin and some case fans. Now where I turn on the system I get an error code 00 (which is progress since I didn't have any error codes before). However no case fans spin. How should I proceed from this? And would it be best to recreate this thread so it still shows as unsolved? Many thanks.

AGAIN I MADE THE SAME MISTAKE OF ACCIDENTALLY PRESSING BEST ANSWER.

I plugged in the 8 pin cable and still get 00. The CPU fan spins. I did include the RAM in this test too, I don't know what it does without the RAM.

Do you mean the CPU is broken or the CPU socket on the motherboard is broken? Sorry I have tried uploading photos but not sure how to do it.

Okay, I'll do that as soon as I can- most likely Tuesday. Do you think changing the position of the RAM could help? Also although the CPU fans did spin, the case fans did not. Could that provide any clues as to what is wrong?

Do you think it would help taking it to a PC repair shop and seeing if they could get it checked out? Would resetting the BIOS help?

Okay I'm really not sure what I did but I've actually got the system to post! I tried updating the BIOS via USB but don't think it worked. So I then removed the entire system from the case and it now suddenly works! So should I assume there's something shorting the system in the case?
