My friend is wondering what motherboard he should should get, the only thing I saw is that the Pro (cheaper) has a SATAe and Thunderbolt capabilities. It seems like a clear choice to me. Is there anything I'm missing as to why the Maximus is more??

You really can't go wrong with either of these mobos. If budget is the issue stick with pro and if you can stretch your budget then bro go for Hero. Both are great mobos from a very good and reliable manufacturer.

I was wondering will there be Formula VII! The beautiful beast has been released.

ROG Hero is purely for gaming not just overclocking. Pro also provides overclocking support.

Here is an in depth review of Hero

ROG (Maximus) is overpriced Asus, that will explain the extra price. the ROG is only really a beneficial choice if the user wants to overclock to the extreme, if not the Z97 PRO is all you really need. With the Maximus, you do get more but do you really need the extra ROG features, no. If the person prefers the colour scheme of the Maximus, that may play a crucial role in his decision, as a matching scheme is better then an odd one.

I would feel like I stepped in something if I went with MSI though /: Thoughts on the ASUS z97-A?

I have the Z87 Hero and, IMHO, it's the best mobo for the price. Disclaimer: I've used Asus mobos since prehistoric days. This time, for a second rig using a 4790K, I opted for the Asus Z97 Pro simply because I'm tired of red/black mobos and I really like the new "platinum" color. I've planned a blue and white color scheme and want to, for he first time, sleeve my own cables and either stitch them together or use a cable comb.
