Hello.

I have an Asus Z97-K motherboard. If I use an SSD to boot am I able to specify a different drive for the RAID1 setup to protect?

My idea is use an SSD to boot then use a 1tb drive as my data drive to be protected by the RAID setup.

thanks, Bj

Hi. Thanks for the quick reply.

Just to be sure before I screw it all together.

I can use the SSD to boot and use a 1tb drive as my data drive and use 2x1tb for the RAID1 set-up. The RAID1 set-up protects the 1tb data drive.

Tossing around 1tb drives kills me. My 1st hard drive was a Seagate 10mb and I thought I'd gone to heaven. I was sure I'd never need any more space ever.

I may have hit a new ,low of tech for me. . Does the data drive encompass the 2 RAID1 drives? The files gets mirrored on the 2nd drive. I was thinking I need a data drive PLUS two additional drives for the actual RAID1 set-up.

I think this is really simple - I over-thought it, and over ordered drives....

thanks, Bj

Raid1 only protects you from 1 drive failing. You still need to backup important files/data to other devices as raid cannot protect from viruses, user error (accidental file deletion), large scale failure (something that destroys the whole pc)...

I would suggest installing that extra 1tb drive into an external enclosure and though its not my favorite form of an "only backup copy", its better than no backup copy at all

Cheers!

ps - you should also install windows with only the boot drive installed. Have the sata controller in the proper mode though (raid). Once windows is installed you can install and configure the raid array.
