Right when my ps4 broke in may I went and got an onsale Acer XF270H b Freesync monitor to start gaming on my MacBook Pro specifically because of its Amd, freesync capable GPU. Specifically listed both 144hz and Freesync were capable through DisplayPort and HDMI. Did'nt even know what a DP cable was. Got home and spent the next two weeks trying to find out why the ef I could only get 120Hz and FreeSync was "Not Supported". I finally gave up and saw Walmart had a "USB C to DisplayPort 4k at up to 60hz" cable for $15.99. Went and got it and immediately recognized 144hz and FreeSync Enabled. I spend even more time afterward resarching why AMD says that freesync is supported by HDMI 2.0 (Basically any device within the past 2-3 years) yet nobody the last I checked have gotten it to work. The only way aparently is through Display Port, but in my case my MacBook's USB C port is the only port that also supports DP. Does the Xbox only have an HDMI port? I havent even seen any past the 360 when I switched to PS4 so I'll look up any possibilities I can think of as a work around.

I actually just looked it up quickly and it seems like the Xbox One X might be only recognize FreeSync through HDMI on a few specific monitors. I think its part of why Microsoft decided to add it, must've been to make deals with monitor brands so it seems like the Asus mg28uq is not a model they've went with. or it was released before Microsoft started making their deals. Or it's not a top seller of Asus's 4k line.. Where did you buy it & do you know when it came out?
