Hello!

I am facing a really hard time upgrading to a newer machine which I have already ordered few days back and waiting arrival.

But...

Just this last weekend I encountered a very common ASUS motherboard error: CPU Over Voltage Error and VCCIN was +2.128 volts in red color. This usually happened at cold boot. Not on restart.

I doubted my aging PSU: Cooler Master GX 550W 80 Plus (Since 2010)

Steps I took: Changed after market cooler to stock. CPU thermal paste reapplied (Arctic Silver 5). Closely inspected board and CPU sockets. Also checked PSU and cleaned it up.

Since I already purchased my machine this new expense will burn a hole in my pocket. But I am prepared to buy a new one since I can't risk of damaging a new rig.

But...

Today the error has disappeared! VCCIN stands at +1.808 volts.

Now I am confused!

Should I trust my PSU, which has seen at least 2 rigs since 7 years, OR, get a new one and have peace of mind?

Help!

Specs:

Asus B85M-G
Intel Core i5 4570
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 8GB
MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8 GB
Cooler Master 550W

They are new.

And not exactly cheap.

But they are very highly rated on jonny guru.

I do know that. But what's actually going on behind the scene here? What went wrong and why now looks fine? I also want to trust this PSU cause its really been working for a long time and many weeks round the clock!

I would recommend getting a new one, you are on borrowed time with your current PSU.

As far as what's going on, it could be a number of things and you might have gotten lucky this time.

I so much want to believe that my PSU is bad here. But I have some reason to doubt the motherboard could be an issue too and since nobody asked any additional questions I would like to explain a bit.

CPU and say the entire system under full load passed out many tests without any issue! Won't this mean that power delivery is doing alright? Why can't the motherboard (or anything else) be the issue as you know that this one is really a low end one?

Yes, I know that I will have to get a new PSU and I have now started looking for some.

What I don't like is NOT KNOWING! I can easily give up and get a new PSU right away but I prefer to have some research done before I bid farewell to this long time loyal friend! I also tested PSU using meter and output is just fine!

Do you have any wisdom for me?

This is upcoming rig:

AMD Ryzen 1600 With Stock Cooler - No OC
MSI Nvidia GTX 1070 Gaming X 8 GB
G.Skill FlareX - 16 GB - 3200
ASUS B350-F ROG Strix
3 HDD and 1 SSD, Blu-Ray Drive

Any suggestion for a value for money PSU?

A Seasonic G-550W is a great value and a high quality unit, it's semi modular. If you want Full Modular then a Seasonic Focus 550W.

By the way does the above voltage of +1.808 normal for Intel Core i5 4570? That I am not sure about! I am looking for that PSU model now. Also updated entire rig info.

Exactly! That is high. Any way to know what is the safe range for it?

Liked the Seasonic FOCUS Plus Series. But tell me something: Why so few people get them? I mean from Amazon to Newegg they are really not that famous!

I am clearly not so experienced here to say the above statement.
