I have an ASUS notebook Q20-E and it will not turn on. At first I thought it had a virus because the internet would not turn on. but after deleting some things it started working again. Then I decided to update it from windows 7 or 8 to 8.1 (i think) but midway through it came to a screen that said something about processing and not to turn it off. at this point my computer was not plugged in to charge. When I left it there for about an hour and a half it shut off and now will not turn on. Is it hopelessly broken? or is there something I can do to fix it?

Solution
Greetings Skylar,

Does it show any signs of power like a led indicator or back lit display? If so try plugging in your device to an external monitor to see if the display is the issue.
Make sure your charger is in working order. Geek Squad or any tech center will have spares to try it out at their counter. Check and see if your outlet is working as well with a nightlight or lamp.
Unplug the power adapter and hold down the power button for 30 seconds then try again.
This method is better with the battery unplugged and I am assuming the battery on this unit is internal.
If you are savvy enough to open it up its not too difficult just be careful not to break any clips on the casing. Then you will have to unplug the connector from battery...

If you are savvy enough to open it up its not too difficult just be careful not to break any clips on the casing. Then you will have to unplug the connector from battery to the motherboard. Then you can try the method of holding down the power button for 30 seconds again.
You can also try reseating your Ram sticks along with trying other sticks to troubleshoot. If your Ram is defective it is known to not let your system boot.
Blow out the vents with an air duster at least once a month for proper maintenance of the fans and components for proper heat exhaust.
Hope your system gets back into shape. Let us know how it goes!
