Hello,

I own an ASUS P2B motherboard with an INTEL 350MHz Pentium II CPU.

I am thinking about upgrading the CPU to an INTEL 700MHz or higher Pentium III CPU.

after asking ASUS about the compatibility of the motherboard to these CPU's I was answered that the motherboard currently supports up to INTEL 600MHz Pentium III CPU.

I would like your opinion on the issue. Maybe you have tested or can test this motherboard series with a faster CPU that 600Mhz (as I know the motherboard DIP Switches can support higher clock rates) and send me the results.

Thank You.

As a prior P2B owner (cried the day it died *sniff*) I remember Asus stating that if it was above Revision 1.12, it would support the Coopermine voltage.

If you use a Slocket adapter that can also control the core voltage (like Abit Sloket !!!) then you can use any revision of the board since the slocket will compensate for the voltage

ok. I've got an Asus P2b-D. I want to also upgrade. In my adventures I found this link very usefull.

http://studio-on-the.net/coppermine.html#asus

It told which revision board did what. From this list 1.06 will support coppermine. (I have 1.05 =((((( )

BUT YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT IF I GET AN ABIT SLOCKET I CAN USE A COPPERMINE IN MY MOTHERBOARD????

If so that would rock. What slocket do I use? And what voltage do I have to change?

thanks

Sorry I missed church, I've been busy practicing witchcraft and becoming a lesbian.

The main problem with the early P2Bx revisions was that it would not support voltages low enough for the Coopermines. The Coopermines run between 1.65 to 1.7 volts. The early Asus P2B boards voltage regulator can only support down to around 1.8 volts.

The newer Slocket adapters now support voltage regulation so you can adjust the voltage low enough for a CU-mine. Since the new chips are also multiplier locked, it would run at the correct speed even though the bios might recognize it as something else.

Now, I wonder, since the Slot1 1GHz Coopermines use a voltage of 1.8, can I drop them straight in to the slot without an adapter? HMmmmmmmm

Like all mods, try this at your own risk. According to Asus' website, this mod does have a high success rate.

To do this you need a P2B board rev 1.02 or greater.

The P2B series of MBs only support processor multipliers up to 8x which means the fastest one you can use is a PIII-800E. Setting your FSB at 112 will give you a nice easy 900MHz. A 124 FSB (if you have a later rev board that supports it) will give you 1GHz. A PIII-800E FC-PGA at the guy down my street is under CDN$270 (about US$150), and the slocket is CDN$15 (US$10).

Notes:
- Use an Asus slocket (ie: Asus S370-133 Rev 1.01)
- Use up to a PIII-800E FC-PGA
- Set the slocket to 1.80 volts
- System boot up will show Pentium III processor as an regular Pentium III processor w/o the 'E'

I run dual PIII-800Es @ 900 on a P2B-D and they go like stink. :)

Have fun,
- JW
