Hello :)

I'm looking at upgrading/replacing RAM in my trusted linux box.

Current specs:
Mother board: Asus P9X79 PRO
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3820 CPU @ 3.60GHz
RAM: DDR3 1333MHz–2400MHz HyperX Genesis 4x4GB KHX1600C9D3K4/16GX
GPU: GEFORCE GTX 1070
PSU: Corsair HX850

The upgrade/replacement kit i have my eye on is this:
RAM Upgrade: G.Skill ARES LP DDR3-2400 C11 QC - 32GB
Memory (RAM), 32 GB: 4 x 8 GB (Quad Channel), DIMM 240-pin, Low Profile, DDR3, 2400 MHz / PC3-19200, CL11-13-13-31, 1.65 V, Supports Intel XMP

Does any of you have any experience/advice regarding my upgrade plan? I am not gaming on this rig, its only for linux mint and qbittorrent. qbittorrent is the one screaming for more ram, it gobbles it up as the number of torrents increases :D

32GB's of ram should be fine but getting to DDR3-2400Mhz might be hit or miss, that platform was very nitpicky on what ram kits you could use. You could stick to the memory QVL for the motherboard at DDR3-2400MHz.

F3-19200CL10Q-32GBZHD
+
F3-19200CL10Q-64GBZHD
are two kits that stood out to me off of the memory QVL.

If you're in need of more ram, then the frequency shouldn't matter to you. In theory, any ram kit that's DDR3 should drop into your motherboard, provided you have the latest BIOS version to work with.

Wow that was quick! :)

Thanks for your reply Lutfij :)

There's that dreaded QVL list again, thanks for pin pointing them two sets of memory. I have no clue what to look for in those QVLs, I'm not an overclocker.... could u tell? hehe.

I will go hunting for them, see if i can find someone selling them in my part of the world.

I guess you would just do a replace? Out with the 4x4 GB i have?

The mother board supports 8 dimms... freaky old board lol
